Hats off to Scott T. and the rest of the Downtown Mandolin Orchestra. The concert last night at the Lawrence, KS Arts Center was a treat. Three Bean Salad opened with some fast, intricate Celtic music, followed by a duo playing a 1906 Gibson F-style mandolain and, of all things, a Contra-Bass Clarinet. The Orchestra finished the program with a varied set of classical and ragtime pieces. The encore was an extended jam of "Liberty" where five soloists took turns leading the group. The fun part of the evenig was sitting in the audience and seeing familiar faces from local acoustic jams and past mandolin concerts. The legendary luthier Jim Triggs was even there. 'Great music, great people - it was the best $5.00 I've spent in months.
