Lack of mando content here, but...

How good are the Zeta Upright Basses? For the money, are there any other options?

Yeah, the other option is called a washtub!

I played one for several years and liked it. It was a Stratos Fusion I had custom made with all the trim, and boy was it beautiful, perfectly made and setup. The sound was quite good, but I have played other electric uprights as good or better (better usually costs more money). I think the basic student model Fusion is a good deal.

I am curious about the new imported NS designed basses. Anyone seen those yet?

I am a mandolin/bass player and can recommend the Emmince Upright, you won't find an easier to play, natural sounding EUB.

The Eminence huh? After looking at the pictures, it looks like one similar to what I saw Byron House playing with Sam Bush a while back...

How does it sound unplugged?

Thanks for the feedback, guys!

Byron does play an Eminence. Gary Bartig makes them in Minneapolis and our bass player has one. Sounds like #### unplugged. It is, after all, an Electric Upright. OTOH, it is the closest electronic instrument to a standup.

Our bass player likes it because it's more portable than a full standup--he's got a small apt and a small car. It records well and sounds good on stage. He uses a little direct box with a couple eq. and vol nobs that we use to find the best acoustic sound we can.

Here's a link to the Eminence page (http://www.gelbass.com/)

The Enimence is good but Knilling made or makes a thinline that was basically a 3/4 with only a 4" deep body and it came with a pu. They came oue in 99' a few years later I saw some othe folks making the same thing for less. Same premise as the Eminence but with more body so you got better tone. For a super compact size the Kydd bass sounds pretty darn good, definetly try one. The NS stuff once you put real double bass strings sound good too. For the Zeta I found it's too much like an electric... Dave Holland shared a bit of very helpful wisdom with me. He uses a 5/8, easier to transport, easier to play and if you get the right one it sounds as big as any 3/4. I played hundreds of jazz gigs on a 5/8's and it always sounded great because it was a 'real' upright. Just my 2 cents. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
