Why buy an artificially banged-up instrument when you can get the real worn-down one? (I'm just joshing here. Wish I could afford what they're "unloading")

His other used offering is not quite as cheap: Dude (http://www.mandolincafe.com/cgi-bin/classifieds/classifieds.cgi?search_and_display_db_button=on&db_id=22822&query=retrieval).
Probably not as distressed either.

The sign of a good instrument is that people try NOT to distress it. The sign of a good musician is a great respect for the instrument upon which they incessanty beat.

Man, I've seem some well beat instruments in the hands of some super players, but Im assuming it was a "respectful" beating they got...it sure sounded nice!

I agree with Santiago. The idea of artificially stressing an instrument seems strange to me. Still, a few use marks don't detract from the value unless I'm buying or selling. I'd rather get a few marks and a better price, than pay a premium for a 100% clean instrument. This seems a bit inconsistent, I know.

I have noticed a lot of high and medium high-end instruments for sale. I wish I could afford one. 6k could probably buy a lot of mandolin right now. That Apitus A-style threatened to give me a case of MAS.

A few marks mean it's been opened up a little. A pristine instrument in a worn case is a danger sign.

It sounds like a good idea to purchase a so called "distressed model", even if it is at a price higher than the same or similar model with top finish.
If you ding it up then you can always say that this was an original manufacturer's 'distress' and get more resale bucks.
