Closeup of back. Penny wanted Italian spruce, but wanted a more Gilchristy type tone also so we went with a sugar maple back...an Italian Gil...

Is there something wrong with your lense Hans, everything looks kinda funny http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif #I love those Eclipse models. I've wanted to do some new design too but I think the best new designs are taken....this being one of them.Great work.

wesley,

I had the same reaction. A racing mandolin. Beautiful, classy, bet it sounds great.

I was thinking it was like an El Greco F5 (the "El 5?"). That is gorgeous! I love the fretboard swoop. I'm happy to say I have the same tailpiece, which is as close as I can hope to get to my own Eclipse at the moment...

Love it. But when I look at I think "comet" rather than "eclipse."

The new model has change a bit since the prototype. But it is still a slick design and I bet it sounds as good as it looks. Maybe I'll get a chance to check it out before it leaves.

Thanks folks! Racing mandolin eh? Maybe that's why Penny and I agreed on the color. Hmm, Fararri 5!
Trying to post a larger pix...love that back. Sugar seems to flame better than red.

Hans...any thoughts on the sound holes....and any difference in sound with each?

Hans
Mar-14-2007, 3:49pm
Arthur, my findings are that the soundholes make no difference. The major difference between Greg's and Penny's is the sugar vs red maple back. Size may make a difference, but the size of these two different sound holes are very close.
Here's an enhanced, larger first pix.

The eclipse is very cool, of course, and I generally agree with the favorable comments above. #Being a person who much prefers A-style mandolins however, in my opinion if you proceded straight up the scroll side of the mando, avoiding the scroll altogether, then you would have about the coolest-looking mando ever. #Perhaps you already make (or have planned) an Eclipse "A" somewhat like I just described. #

At any rate, your above eclipse is really neat, and I am sure the sound is on par with the appearance. #Just thought I'd throw out an A-guy's humble opinion.

A closer comparison would be my prototype compared with Greg's as they both have red maple backs. Might be able to entice Greg over to make some of those sound clips this weekend.

Potosi, watch out what you wish for! http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif #That is a whole 'nuther ball game though, and as much time as dreaming up a new design takes...well I just don't have it right now.

Hans, Beautiful mandolin. Love the color. What a cool innovative design! I could never dream of something like that in a million years. Nice job!

I got to play Pennys' mando this morning and it can be described with one word. WOW!!

It does sound as good as it looks. It is clear and punchy with great projection. And like all of Hans' mandolins it plays very easy.

Hans, just fantastic. This just may be the next "Lloyd Lore" replacement copyable(sp) mandolin design. Great going, keep up the great designs.

Does she play fingerstyle? I don't see no pick.

But that's a very nice Eclipse there.

Hans-

do you make a version with an open scroll, like the Grand Artist type?

Mar-23-2007, 6:49pm
I love the gentle flow of this design. The less acute angles are easy on the eyes. Consider me a new fan! http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Mark, I sprung the camera on her before she had a chance to get the pick out.
Wes, the whole idea behind the original concept was to fill in the "hook", so to speak, and make an elongated scroll. Not sure how the hook would look with that peghead shape.
