Just ordered my new mandolin, coming from Greg Boyd's, with a MacIntrye acoustic pickup. I've been reading others posts of using a pre-amp with this. I would appreciate any suggestions which to use with this p/u. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/coffee.gif

For the money, I really liked the LR Baggs Para Acoustic DI. They claim thier belt clip models, which are even less expensive, use the same basic circuitry, so they might be a good deal also. I subsequently "traded up" to a Boss AD-5 Acoustic Instrument Processor. It has given me good service for a lot of years and it has a lot of features. I have to say, though, I think I liked the sound of the Baggs a little better.

i have the baggs gigpro and have used it live twice, and was thrilled. easy to use (even for a novice in amping an instrument like me). true to the sound. i have even figured out how to emphasize the lows and cut the highs on certain songs for a bassier sound. highly recommend.

Ditto on the LR Baggs Para Acoustic DI. Although I use a mike on my mando, I use a K and K pick-up on my guitar and the LR Baggs Para Acoustic DI as the pre-amp. This pre-amp was recommended to me and I am very happy with it (I have the floor model, not the one you clip on your belt).

I'm satisfied with a McIntyre Feather run through a Marshall ED1 Compressor and a Fishman GII pre-amp into an AER Compact 60 (which has a DI outlet but gives me control over my EQ and a monitor facility). I find using a medium pick, in place of my usual very heavy one, helps tone through this kind of set-up.

Just one thing about the Baggs DI. You may want to get a power supply for it if you don't have phantom power from your PA. Those 9 volts don't last too long in them.
