Here is a couple pics of my new MD-615 with the Golden Age finish. #More of a caramel tone than the mustard color that I have seen on an Eastman archtop guitar. #It is pretty. #I bought it from Steve Perry who did the set-up and upgrade.
It just arrived this morning. #I took the photos before I even took a pick to her. #It should be warmed up properly now. #So I'll spend some time with it this evening. #

So far, so good. I don't have alot of experience with other mandolins to compare it with. My starter was a Johnson MF-100. But the difference between them is like night and day.
I now have an understanding of what is referred to as an instrument 'opening up'. At first it sounded as if I was playing inside of a garbage can. A real hollow, dull sound. But by the end of the evening it had moments where it would really ring.
To me the tone sounds very deep, yet bright. Much more volume and clarity on the A and E strings. Double-stops are very full and clear. Sounding like several instruments at play. I can even play tremolo on double-stops with clarity. Something I couldn't do on the Johnson.
Fretting is much easier. Like the difference between manual and power steering. But is much less forgiving. Finger placement needs to be more precise, as improper placement is greatly amplified as a clunker.
Chords are much clearer with the higher notes coming into the sound better than with the Johnson. And I find that my chords changes are easier to accomplish.
It's a keeper for me.
