I've seen pictures of Poe mandolins # 1,2,4,5,8,9,10,11. #Does anyone have a picture of # 3,6,or 7? #I thought I read he is up to # 20 now.

Not an answer to your question gwalt, but I will post pics of #16 (A5 model) as they become available. I was so taken by #11 that I think I am going with a similar theme.

It seems like lots of orders are going in to Andy. Waiting for #14 myself. I think this guy's skills are pretty remarkable given his age.

I think he is up to #20 on his waiting list but he hasn't built that high yet.

I have a headstock shot of #3 and also a full pic of the back of #3 hanging with the only Driftwood mandola and #4. Hey my 600th post!

There are lots of folks singing his praises on the Cafe and I am obviously one of them. When do you expect #14 to be done Steve?

Hopefully Andy will get the rest of the pictures on his new website soon. As busy as he has been I don't think he has much time for webpage work.

Steve, Andy has said to look for a June-August time frame. I'm crossing my fingers for ealier, but I'll take it when I can get it. He's been a great guy to work with and very responsive. What about your #16?

Steve-o
Feb-10-2007, 12:43pm
I'm right in there with you. He said July or August, and yes, he is a great guy to work with. I appreciate his suggestions when I have been kicking around ideas. I am looking forward to seeing and playing the mando for the first time, but am enjoying the process getting there. I don't want to hurry such a fine artisan.

Poe owners on this thread: How did you like the set up Andy does with his instruments? Were the action, playability, and intonation to your liking?

Poe owners on this thread: #How did you like the set up Andy does with his instruments? #Were the action, playability, and intonation to your liking?
Well, I'm not a Poe owner since my mando is a pre-Poe Driftwood, but I've had it for 2 years and I've not changed anything to the setup.

It came strung-up with Thomastik heavies, and I've been using mainly these and JazzMando JM-11s. If I want more volume, I put some some J74s and that does the trick. I found the driftwood to be very responsive to string changes.

The action was low-ish (I'm not too keen on super low, my stubby fingers play extra notes if the action is too low http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif ). The intonation was spot-on, but that's easy to fix anyway. The notes are true all the way to the 15th fret... I didn't bother testing after that as I just don't venture down that end of the mando anyway.

I'm sure you'll enjoy your Poe, Andy makes good instruments.

Mine came setup very low for my liking, I'm a heavy handed monroeish type player. I immediatly changed the strings to J-74s and tweeked around with the bridge height until I got it where I wanted it. Intonation was of course perfect. String spacing was right on what I wanted. Using a set of Monel Sam Bush strings right now. They sound pretty good. I'm going to try a set of J75s and see what they do for it.

That's the blue adhesive used to protect the fingerboard when staining/finishing the mandolin... It does come off #http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif

Many builders just use regular masking tape for that:

No, these are two mandolins built by Lynn Dudenbostel (http://www.thefishnet.com/makemandolin/newmake.htm)...

Thanks for posting that grandmainger! That made for a well spent Sunday afternoon since my parents are asleep. Why is it that my mando calls to me the most whenever the rest of the house is asleep?

I like how Andy's mandolins are so easily recognizable as his. Traditional, but still a very distinct sense of style. An understated flashiness. That blonde is a real bombshell.

I'm not sure what style #7 is. Andy said the buyer wanted to wait on delivery so it doesn't have a finish on it yet.

Hello poeholics.

#7 will be an A ovalhole, something about amber colour, satin finish...
I asked Andy to finish this one closer to the end of year 2007, so I could have enough time to tease Driftwood #18(arrived in January 2006), which I enjoy very much.

That F-4 is just smoking. Makes the wait until June seem that much longer.

Thanks F5G WIZ,
have been reading everything in MandolinCafe for last year trying to find an easy and painless way to become a good picker... Now I have calmed down and realized that there is no such way, only practise practise and practise...
I falled in love with Andys mandolins from the first sight at his Driftwood site and now playing # 18 made me a Poe fan, great look great sound, from mandoholic I turned into poeholic. No cure found yet http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

<span style='font-family:comic sans ms'><span style='font-size:10pt;line-height:100%'><span style='color:navy'>Hey all,

I was given the June to Augusta timeline for mine, also. #My name's on #15. #Andy said that he started work on it while he was finishing #9 & #10. #When I placed my order, he thought #15 was a good match for what I was looking for. #I ordered a 'Grand'F-style with a red spruce top, Waverlies and a James tailpiece, traditional sunburst finish, with fingerboard markers the same size as the ones on the side of the fingerboard. #No pics yet, but Andy said he would send some.</span></span></span>

Welcome to Poeholics not-so-anonymous Road Dog. Can't wait to see #15. Sounds like a classic. I'm going with an A-model on #16, since I want to complement the (non-Poe) F that I already own.

I decided to get a bluegrass mandolin (mainly a banjo player, but also play guitar and mandolin - I've had a '92 Flatiron 2-K for about 8 years). #My plan was to find a good deal on a used Gibson or Flatiron F, when I stumbled on a Poe thread here at the cafe. #Love at first sight. #Now it's all over but the waiting. #See you Friday.</span></span></span>
