Hello all,

I ordered an A model from Keith Newell in October and received it a few days before Christmas, I thought you guys might like to see it and hear it.

Here it is as a baby

I decided to go with a non traditional color scheme, with colors inspired by pictures of a BRW and an Oldwave I found here on the cafe.

Keith makes a sweet pickguard

And of course we've all seen his excellent tailpieces (seriously how sweet is this!)

That's all I've really got, they were taken the day I got it. In retrospect I probably should have gotten one of the headstock too. Maybe if there's demand I'll take some more.

Here are two songs I recorded that sound a little different sonically, I used different picks and different techniques on each of them. These are originals (neither of which is very fleshed out - still working the ideas around in my head...)

http://www-personal.umich.edu/~garnetb/comptonme.mp3 - sort of a Mike Compton inspired piece.
http://www-personal.umich.edu/~garnetb/grumpy_time.mp3 - A little more on the TIm O'Brien/Flinner side of things

These weren't recorded in a professional setting, just using the cruddy MXL condenser mic...but they turned out okay, I'm particularly pleased with the sound on Grumpy Time ( http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif )

To sum it all up I have to say that working with Keith was a fantastic pleasure, and that experience continues with the instrument in my hands. It was also educational, I feel like I know much more about how mandolins (in specific this one!) are made and that makes it all the more special to me.

Garnet, that's a beautiful mando. I like your songs as well (not to mention the tone).

Thanks guys!

I've been informed that on some computers the song is not playing, I've put it here now:

A beautiful instrument, both sound and looks. I love the pickguard. Perhaps you could post a face on shot of that. Quite unusual. Very nice songs, too. I liked the way each one gradually evolved. So light on the E string that I thought it was a very nice mandola and had to go back and check.

great looking mando! Is the neck joint a traditional dovetail? I see the fretboard isn't raised from the top. Its got awesome tone too. At the first mando tasting (2nd?) at Wintergrass there was a Newell A there that was easily in the top 5 of them all.

Hey! This topic is back! Cool!

I will post more pictures soon.

Keith's said the neck joint is a "dovetail with locking dowels" - I don't know enough about mandolin construction to say if that's traditional or not.

Still loving this instrument, I think the tone is changing a bit, or I'm learning how to use my pick better. Either way, it's all good http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
