I recently bought my daughter a used viola and the case it came with is an fugly musturd yellow. It has a Samsonite leatherette type cover.

I was thinking that after I gave the case a good bath, I would use medium to fine emory cloth to rough it out so the primer will stick. Then I thought I could attempt to #spray it with primer and spray paint it to the desired color.

Any other suggestions? What type of spray primer/paint would be good for the job?

Thanks,

I had a Les Paul "Epiphone" case that I used for a Les Paul. I didn't like the gold Epiphone on the case so I used flat black spray paint to paint over the gold lettering. i think I painted the whole top of the case to blend it in. I also picked up a rectangular Washburn mandolin case with the name in gold on it. I did the same thing with it.

I'd suggest simply getting a can of spray paint made for painting vinyl. I've used the Rustoleum brand paint for vinyl to paint a spare tire cover. Has held up well in sun, rain, heat cold, etc, and would likely do well for an instrument case.

Likely it will be available at Home Depot, Lowes, etc.

I have used a automotive vinyl dye in a spray can with great success.

My buddy has an auto Interior shop and he uses SEM dye. It dries quick. Wipe it down with Acetone first to get any oils off of it.
