I found a Collings mt that plays like a wonder, but it is a blacktop.....not to sure about that.
I was wondering if any have seen or heard of a blonde mt?
Thanks for your response.

I have seen several, both blacktop and total blondes. You can check with Steve at Acoustic Music Works (http://www.acousticmusicworks.com/).

Floss,

Where did you find the blacktop MT? How's the sound of it?

I have spent a lot of time debating whether to buy this one or not. I think it's gorgeous. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mandosmiley.gif

That Bird's Eye MT2 is absolutely incredible. Have never played a bad one. Lp

The Blackface mt was at mass street music in Lawrence Kansas. Galen the salesman was right...sounded great and was smooth as silk to play... But I have reservations ...the blacktop was a little hard to swallow.

Take your time--buy what you really want, or you'll regret it later on (and maybe lose money in an instrument flip). IMHO. Dan

There a Blackface ( I hate that term) at Greg Boyds.I'd rather call it a blackened top.

Look at Mandohack's NAMM thread in the Post a Picture section...

Just curious, but what's behind your aversion to blacktops? I've had two. I think they're the sharpest looking mandolins, especially on stage. You still have sunburst on the back and sides if you want to see the wood.

The one at Greg Boyd's looks really nice.

Crowder...it is just a style type thing. Now it is not my hot button, it might be later. I think they show signs of wear faster than a blonde or sunburst. I will be looking to sell the next mandolin in the future probably....just want to protect the re sale without freaking out.

Style I can understand, but I wouldn't worry about the wear issue. In a way, blacktop mandos are like black cars in that light surface scratches are going to show easier. But over time the whole top takes on a patina that is very cool. IMHO anyway http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I've been thinking of getting in some blondes for a while (don't start..). In the past I've had a few and created a lot of interest but no sales. I'm giving it a go again. A Collings MT is due in a few weeks..
I'll have asked Rosta Capek to make me an A4 basic blonde as well when he catches up with my orders.

I agree with ToneMonster about the term "blacktop" for an instrument with a black top. Why don't we think about calling these instruments "blacktops"... that'll get the job done and eliminate a phrase that still can press some hot buttons.

I guess we could change the name of f-holes to something else too - maybe Florentine sound openings. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

Just happened to notice this thread after a long, long absence from this board. I own MT 1168. Man, the thing is a wonder. I don't play it much but every time I do, I'm really pleased that I came up with the loot required to make it mine.
