This weekend I listened to "Prairie Home Companion" being broadcast from the Rymon auditorium in Nashville. Allison Krause was on the show and she had a 12 year old, Sierra Hall I believe was her name, playing the mandolin. She was absolutely incredible! Played "Big Mon" and burned it down. I put my mandolin up for sale after the show.

Anyone catch this?

I guess Sierra and her brother are touring with AK and many others on the upcoming tour.

I was in the car, on my way to the monthly local BG jam, when I managed to catch about the last ten minutes or so of the show... just enough to hear Ms. Hull tear into "Big Mon." Don't know if it was the after-effects of having just heard a 12-year old dance on the fretboard the way I only wish I could, but somehow my breaks during the jam came off sounding, to me, a bit more pathetic than normal!

Oh well, back to the drawing board...errr, fretboard...errr, whatever...

;-)

Seriously though... Sierra - if you're peekin' in here, you're truly an inspiration to us "old guys!" Please keep on doin' what you do, young lady!

I had just spent the last hour playing (or trying to) Big Mon and then tuned in to catch the very end of the show, and that song!

It sounded great! #I loved how much space there was in her lead, just picking out the best notes, and with great tone!

The guitar lead was a treat, too.

hehe... I doubt Sierra would have much time right now to peek at the board, 'cause she's packing for the tour! #I can't wait to meet her when I see the Branson, MO concert. #She's going to sign my mandolin! #

Back to the topic at hand... I listened to the show over the internet. #It's archived at Prairie Home Companion Show Archive (http://prairiehome.publicradio.org/performances/20040501/).

If you just want to hear Alison's segment, click on segment 4. #The first 10 minutes is a HILARIOUS story and Alison is one of the characters. #My favorite line that she says is:
*in a sweet southern accent* "C-H-I-C-K-E-N, and that is how you spell chick-en friends!" #You have to hear it to know just how funny it is. #

After the story are the performances. #Great songs. #They all did a fantastic job. # http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mandosmiley.gif

Yeah - caught the gospel tune they sang and that was it. Plan to look on PHC website and listen to it there.

(sam bush was on there a month or two ago as well, probably archived on the site as well....)

I got to see Sierra live on the Great High Mountain tour last week. She did her own set, backed by her brother on guitar and vocals, then played with AK and also backed Ralph Stanley on "Angel Band," where she was in a "quartet" mandolin solo with Nancy Blake, Mike Compton and Dan Tyminski! That was special! Her stage presence portrays her to be a fine young lady and her playing is great. We can only imagine where she will be in 10 years. My guess is she will be the a Chris Thile and an Allison Krauss all rolled into one for the next generation.

There's no question about it. That Sierra is going to be one big bluegrass star one day. I was actually standing next to Chris Thile when he met her. I think how it happened was some guy heard Sierra playing "Ode to a Butterfly" and he told Chris. So Chris ran over there, introduced himself(as if she didn't know who he was), and before ya know it they were jammin' and Chris was giving her his address and cell phone number. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif Later that night Chris introduced Sierra to Alison K.

Sierra is great. She is a really great girl too. Fun to be around. She lives about 1 1/2 hours from me and we pick together on a regular basis. She is working on a new CD in my studio too. We are about half finished with it. She is also a great guitar picker and decent on fiddle and is beginning to pick up the banjo. Cody (her brother) is also doing pretty well on guitar. I went to Missouri last year with her and her family to do a show for a college fund raiser and I can't tell you enough about what a great family she has. They are some of the finest people you could ever be around. Her dad (Stacy) wrote 3 of the songs that are going on my band's (KY Wind) new CD. He is an excellent song-writer and just another evidence of the tremendous talent in this family. You should take the time to get to know them if you can. They are down-to-earth as they come.
