Here's a happy story for the holidays. Guitar and mandolin builders Jim and Ryan Triggs (http://www.triggsguitars.com/) had a little holiday get together at the local brew pub this past Thursday. At it I mentioned my daughter was bringing Grace, her friend from school, and that she played violin and guitar. I'd told him how at my daughter's birthday party she had played my mandolin for about 45 minutes without putting it down and was really smitten with it. Long story short, Jim and Ryan sent this nifty little flatback mandolin they made over on Friday and we just gave it to Grace this afternoon and she is beyond being thrilled. Got that Mike Compton thing going a bit, eh?

That's the kind of thing you look for in a builder, quality and a heart!

Awesome story! #Thanks for posting it.

And, MentalFloss ... great signature! I read yours to my wife, and she asked if I had written it myself!

Next question: do these guys make and sell flattops like that one ... ? #Didn't see any when I visited the site, only things that required an absorbant bib to handle my drooling ... #http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

Great community here - cheers to all!

Cheers to the Triggs, also to the new mando-addict. Is that a bow or a red inlay on the headstock? And nice front-porch-picking weather for Christmas in Kansas.
Now if she could only find somebody to show her a few licks. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

Ain't no snow in Kansas. Only dry, dry, dry. Anything with moisture passes us by.

Wonderful Christmas story - even better than a Redrider BB gun. "You'll play your fingers off, kid!"

We can vouch for the authenticity of the porch. #As a matter of fact, Scott had another mandolin delivered there this morning with our names on it. #Scott and that porch are indeed magical. Many good things have happened there.

I always tell my sons that planting a little seed one day yields a mighty oak. Encouraging a young musician like that is just a great thing to do... any time of year much less today.

That wonderful smile is probably still on that child's face. And what a nice looking mandolin too. That could be one of those positive, life changing events in a kid's life. Generousity is best taught by example. Well done!

Glenn asked "where's the snow?". It's here in Colorado. I hope the next batch makes it out to Kansas.

That little girl is definitely cute. Great story.

I checked the website, is Jim Triggs making this model or is it a one off?

Jim and Ryan don't do these models productionally. They built the templates and parts for these a few years ago and they were to be finished by some friends who were interested in learning to build, but didn't end up doing very many. I actually own one of these that I've had for probably 5-6 years and it's a fun little mandolin.

It's a red bow we added to it just for fun.

It looks like a nice addition to the low end of a line. You said flat bottom , Scott, is it a carved top?

Flat top.
