I never seen anything like this outside of Troy Hernandez, the uke maestro (think Ka'au Crater Boys) from Hawaii ne. I know he uses acrylic on his nails to toughen em up. I guess if ya break it off your outta luck for a while...lol.

Classical guitarist generally have long nails to play with.

My nails are short, but I never use picks unless I am playing melody on mandolin or playing mandolin at a jam. I use my fingers on the guitar, banjo, mandolin, and ukulele. I do also use a pick on the strum-stick, mainly to get volume. For the most part, I hate the sound of a pick when I play, but don't mind when others play with a pick.
