Just recv'd John's "Upslide" CD, and am totally blown away.
As a guitar and mandolin player myself, it particular appeals to me; he's a master on both (without showing off).
It's not a rock record but I didn't know if I should post this in the BG section or Celtic.
Well done John!

Catch a sample on the Cafe MP3's. John, I've long held your playing on "Firepocket" on a very high pedestal!

Sometime's a guys so talented it just makes you sick.
I knew John is master of guitar, mandolin, OM, Bouzouki...
And now he plays the peda-stal, too?
Is their no limit to what stringed instruments he can handle?

Having known John for a long time and seen him in a great number of bands & settings, and even having take lessons from him, I don't think there is a fretted instrument he can't play. And play well!!! Very Welll

Agreed. He has a very original, powerful style on the mandolin. One of the best.

Probably a silly question: where do you buy the CD?

Not long ago I burned a cd from some of the songs on the cafe mp3 area. I can't stop listening to John's upslide medley. It's really great! Thanks JM

You all are great, thanks. I am really glad people are liking my obscure cormer of the musical universe. I have copies of Upslide available through my website http://www.johnmcgann.com/recordings.html

I just bought that masters back from Green Linnet and will be able to re-issue it at some point; meanwhile, Mel Bay will be publishing all the guitar and mando notation and tab in separate editions.

I've had "Upslide" for at least 6 to 8 months and it's still is on regular rotation on the cd player. I just never seem to tire of it, I wish I could say that about all my other cd's! What I really like about it is how the tunes seem familiar but they are McGann originals. Tasteful, eclectic, great stuff. Makes me want the book, BAS?

Not only is John a fantastic player, he is a master music transcriber as well. Many years ago, I sent him some recordings of solos I wanted to learn. These were either recorded off record or taken off live tapes of guys like Sam Bush, Jimmy Gaudreau, Ricky Allred. Not only did he pick up every nuance and rhythmic idiosyncracy, he laid out the music in such a way as to make it easy to see/feel the tunes. I still go back to those when I want to be Sam Bush!
