I'm just curious as to how this great site got started. Are you a mandolin picker, computer geek or both? I would assume you're a seasoned mando picker. What do you play? Any recordings?

Check out the cafe mp3 page. My favorite is A Place in the Heart.

Fascinating.
1) #Wasn't aware that Scott was from Lawrence, KS. #I spent 2 years in grad school at KU. #Absolutely loved Lawrence. #Ended up convincing my youngest to go to KU, and she also loved both the University and Lawrence. #
2) #Interesting that Scott mentions vi as one of the tools used to develop and maintain the site. #I actually know what that is -- even though it's been a while since I've actually used it.
3) #I'm sure I'm like a lot of people as I check out what's happening at the Mandolin Cafe at least once a day. #Thanks, Scott.

Although a little off topic, I find this website is very pleasing to the eye. The colors of many other message boards just plain give me a headache. But this one is so soft and easy to look at and to use.
I have actually met folks from the cafe message board, and find it to be a close-knit community.
And lastly, I have Mandolin cafe as my home page. I go to this site every morning with coffee, and become antsy if I don't.
Thank you Scott!

Bob, to answer, I've been playing mandolin about 30 years. I don't know if that makes me seasoned. Maybe well done is a better choice of words. I have a few various cuts on the Cafe MP3 page. I did a solo recording in 1991 that sold tens, maybe a hundred. As far as the web, I suspect I'm just like anyone else that ever built a web site, only I haven't yet figured out how to stop doing it. Thanks for the interest, but there are far more interesting things to talk about I think.

Scott,
You are too modest. You (and I am sure others) provide an incredible resource and, yes, a feeling of community to the mandolin world.
I could go on, and on, and on..
I hope you go on, and on....

You <span style='font-family:Courier'>vi</span> Nazis (I'm one) slay me. I must admit that the Cafe 21-Chord coffee mug got its inspiration from the vi lovers coffee mug (http://www.cafepress.com/geekcheat/366808) years ago, and it's still my cup of choice at work. Thanks everyone for the nice comments.

Check him out on Charmaine (mp3). My Gawd, he swings!
He also downtunes the G string to F# while playing the last chorus. Talk about a show-off!
There's also a Mandolin Magazine article about him somewhere around.

I was so glad to hear *nix, Apache, Perl #and not Windows and IIS!...
I guess I'm a geek too, since that made me laugh (One of the customers we support has far too many Windows boxes, and very few proper Unix or Linux-based web solutions in their environment, so it made me wince as well. ;)
We don't use no steeenkin' windows here!

I suppose .*nix would have been more syntax appropriate, eh?
So, how many of you self-proclaimed vi geeks know the dwelp command? http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif
:wq!
Ah, Windows vs. UNIX, Java vs. .Net, Apache vs. IIS. Reminds me of the A vs F discussion going on. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif The holy wars continue.
Great site though Scott. Love the cup. It holds single malt just fine. #http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/coffee.gif

I was going to order a cafe mug the other day, but lately if a site doesn't let me just click paypal but instead wants me to drag out my purse to get my credit card number, I just cancel the order... does that make me a lazy geek?

I normally don't comment on misspelled words, but the image of you settling disputes via collective farming was pretty entertaining.

Would just like to add that I think this is a great site and I have enjoyed it greatly in my brief time here.

You mean there is some other site that works as a (first thing that I see in the morning with my coffee) home page?
I also wish to give well deserved props to Scott for the web's most important site.
Thanks man.
