Had this built with some poker winnings....came across some of his work in a coffee shop. Gave him a call and gave him free reign.

But it is a bugger to tune.

It looks like metal. And it looks heavy.

That looks dangerous! I could picture someone from KISS power chopping on it.

I'll bet it is!

I think the spot welded bindings might just catch on...

a bicyle chain would make a great strap for that!

Not mando related, but the bass player /lead singer with Type O Negative uses a full size chain for a strap on his Alembec

Is that thing actually playable or is it meant to be just looked at? The pics are so dark it is difficult to tell. It looks menacing. I guess that's the idea.

Reminds me of a heavy metal celtic harp I once had - it was all of not-so-heavy aluminum, black, with lots of rivet-like screws along the edges. And it was actually playable, but sounded kind of - well - metallic.

Taking a closer look - is that headstock made of a bicycle pedal?? http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wow.gif

Headstock IS a bicycle pedal....tuners are from a hubcap (I think he said it was from an Oldsmobile). The F "holes" are bicycle deral...derailll...gear shift thingys. The strings are bicycle spokes. Bridge is a bicycle sprocket.

Michael, You ARE kidding aren't you? Although I can think of a couple tunes we play where this might be an appropriate electric instrument (actually been working on "Pictures of Matchstick Men" with mando and dobro). Too much fun.

Here's the guy who built it:

No, it was a real question. The pic is so dark I can't see much detail. Guess I got fooled, pretty good though. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Very cool! The tuners look quite oriental, like on a shamisen or something. I like it most because you used poker winnings to commission it and that you support local art.

Again, very cool!
Best,
Ken

This person showed up on my patio looking for that mandolin - what should I tell her?

I'll bet that it comes in an "A" style and you get the same sound for a lot less money. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
