May is just a few days away. I thought early on Fisher's Hornpipe was the certain winner but Cattle in the Cane has a substantial lead. Let's get the vote out.

How 'bout a medley? You could call it your Surf-n-Turf combo! http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

"Surf-n-Turf" http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I know it says on Yahoo! that the poll for May ends at the end of May, but i figured you all know it's this week.

Also, i'm heading off on a well deserved holiday on Saturday, May 1st. So, I'm gonna end the poll a few hours early (I'm on greenich mean time). In the 10 days I'm gone, I won't be able to make any updates to the MP site. If you've got any tunes you want me to add to the Misc Musings or the Cherokee Shuffle pile send them soon!

Thanks

Staines Morris (1656)
"Then to the Maypole haste away....."

who (for better or worse) leads a pickup band(and is the duty Jester) May 1 for a local May Day festival - a Mummer's play and subsequent Maypole dance. Ah, spring.

Staines Morris is great fun on mando, but doesn't take all that much learning -- it's a very straightforward tune that's best played simple, so not much call for variations or fills. Not sure it'd keep us occupied for a whole month (says he who hasn't got around to put in any time at all with Cherokee Shuffle...)

Right on Martin, although it has occupied me for a day or so getting it right. Simple, straightforward and clear, even it's unusual first measure. Is this tune a true harmonic minor, or just minor shifting to major at the chorus? Now harmonic minor is something that could take up a month of exploration!

There are a few different versions of Staines Morris. The one I play is:

Here. (http://sniff.numachi.com/~rickheit/dtrad/pages/tiSTAINESM;ttSTAINESM.html)

I note, however, that the version on the classic "Morris On" album is somewhat different. If you're about to lead a dance on May Day, you may want to have these links for the dance that goes with the tune:

Staines Morris Dance (http://www.cam.ac.uk/societies/round/dances/cdb/cdb2/staines.htm)

or

Hey, Cattle In the Cane (also known as Cattle in the Corn) can be a HOOT, if you find the right version. My partner and I play one I'd recommend any day. I sent Craig a midi of it, but don't know if he posted anywhere....

It's okay Alan, save those FH chops for June. We will start the campaign rally early.

The funny thing is I've not even TRIED to play Fisher's yet! I just thought it sounded cool.

(actually I was hoping I could upload Josh Pinkham's version, and say I'd practiced a LOT.)

I had the exact same thought http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif

Cattle in the Cane is my obsession now. Since Craig is out of town and has not posted the official tab, what versions are you all using?

Cattle isn't yet my obsession as I haven't recorded CS, but I've been listening to Sam Bush et al. do it on the BG Mando Extravaganza CD. Awesome.

I think you can find the first Sam Bush solo on co-mando. I like the way the B part sounds on the low strings in this version.

Have fun.

I haven't played it much yet, but I'm using Simon Shartel's version.
