I don't remember seeing one before either. Looks cool. Nice figure on the back.

I have a friend seriously considering this one. They are amazing instruments. I remember an old member of the NY Mandolin Orchestra playing some of the Bach Cello Sonatas on one of those. A lovely sound from a lovely instrument.

A similarly nice L&H Style A mandocello (in Oregon, if I recall correctly) sold a year or two ago on ebay for around $7500. I missed it by only a few dollars. :-(

Still, I wonder if he'll get $9.5-10K for it...?

There are a number of offers pending on it. Plus the seller informed my friend that if it doesn't sell he has a standing offer from a reputable dealer to sell it on consignment. You may see it on a list soon... or not.
Aft6er speaking to a luthier who did the set up on this 'cello, my friend's main concern was that the tuners seem to be worn. A number of knowledgeable people informed said that these tuners -- tho they are the same as the ones for the mandolins -- are hard to come by for replacements and that std modern tuners would unlikely work given the headstock configuration.

I'd bet someone with 10k to put into a mandocello would be able to scrounge up the pocket change recquired to procure proper vintage tuners or even have new ones reworked to fit. If I had the money I think it'd be hard to keep me off that sweet thang! http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mandosmiley.gif

Maybe, assuming you could find replacements. I honestly thing even with large amounts of cash they may be hard to come by. I have not looked under my L&H mandolin's bakelite cover to see exactkly what these tuners are but I would think they are not easily replaced by Schallers, for instance. How about a 10k unplayable mandocello?

Man what a beautifull instrument.
