Yeah, there are both minor and major key versions of this tune. Most bluegrass bands do it major. Doyle Lawson does it in C and it is supposedly the fastest song on record, by BPM, according to a guy I was talking to at a jam one time.

The version by Garcia/Grisman on the Shady Grove CD is just Dm/C.

The version by Garcia/Grisman on the Shady Grove CD is just Dm/C.
I think that's how I've always encountered it in minor keys.

There's a book from the Grisman & Garcia album "Shady Grove" transcribed by John McGann here. (http://www.music44.com/X/product/98101-M) #It has Shady Grove in Dm along with many other cool tunes.

Always sounded like Tony played that quick G, E7, thang at the end of each verse and chorus like he does on Jerusalem Ridge. Does he not?

How about Doc? Is he just Dm and C?

Doc's version I think goes:

Dm C Dm F C Am Dm

The transcribed Shady Grove that J. McGann did was for mandola as that is what DAWG played on the Shady Grove album. The standard notation is there though so you could use that.

Tony Rice and Peter Rowan have been doing a verison where they modulate keys between Dm and Am ...very cool

So......I just pulled my book and realized I can use the mandola tab as written for when I modulate to the key of Am...

Got some new licks for next gig!

A mandola is tuned CGDA, the top 3 strings are the same as the bottom 3 strings on the mandolin. You can just shift the entire transcription from the Shady Grove book over a string and play it in Dm on the mandolin (except for the last few bars of the 2nd solo, where he plays notes down on the C string too low to play on the mandolin).

Niles Hokkanen (mandocrucian) teaches the tunes in dm w/ some great variations in his Hot Bluegrass Solos book/cd. Variations include a claw-hammer banjo picking style adapted to mandolin. Cool Stuff.

The version we do we learned from "The Essential Doc Watson" recording. It's in Ebm -- either the original recording is off pitch or Doc capoed the dm on the first fret. We play it in the same key.. mainly because when we were learning the tune it was the only recording I had. Good for closed-position minor practice. We do it fast now.. and usually I can hit all the notes http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

A neat version of this tune is on the Misty River CD called Willow. Reishsman does the mandolin work. They modulate between major and minor.. a cool sound.

Cheers

RobP: Can you let us know the chords in Ebm? I have picked along in this version. Very hard on the left hand, but also real fun. I like it and would very much like to figure out all the chords. Normally I do it in Dm, C , Dm ,F, C, Dm. As I noted from Perry's post, Dm C Dm F C Am Dm, looks like I have been missing an Am. I'm going to try that.
Thanks for the great posts I love this tune.

Maybe Ebminor isnt traditional, but it sure is good for closed position practice/proficiency!
