I don't care. They are freakin' Bluegrass. And if not, they're Country which fits into this category anyway. Let them come. I can take them. I'm like...a ticked off Elf, or that wooden horse in Troy! *sheesh was that weird*

I used to think it was not bluegrass. Rather that they had created their own style. I think Bill Monroe would have approved. However in the light of all in the past 30 years that has called it self part of bluegrass ("breaksfast special"comes to mind) Then I think they are def. a part of bluegrass. I don't like em overly but my 14 yr old does. So they are fine by me. They are amazing stylist though. Lot's of folks don't like anything different. like eating the same blackeyed peas everyday...

to the person who asked about Sara's solo album... she actually is working on one... I asked her about it after a Watkins Family Hour show a couple months ago and she said it's gonna be in more of a "rock" mode. So THAT should be pretty freaking cool. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Anyway as you can guess from my name I'm a huge NC fan. Chris is the person who inspired me to pick up the mando, actually! I've seen them in concert a few times; they put on an amazing live show. Go see 'em if you haven't!

I think the thing I like best about NC is they don't fit into any particular genre. Their first CD has a few bluegrass songs. The one before that is maybe mostly bluegrass, gospel bluegrass. Great music btw, I wish they'd re-release it. Their 2nd CD, "This Side" is definatly not bluegrass. Smoothy Song is jazzy. The first time I heard it I kept waiting for Bela Fleck to break in. Spit On a Stranger is almost psychedelic. Nickel Creek offers a little something for everybody I think. I read that they had lost some fans after their last album because they had broken away from their country/bluegrass roots. I think that is kind of sad. These kids are great musicians and if you take a look at other recording artists their age, how many of them can get by without electronic effects, or even play an instument for that matter?

I anxiously await their next release to see what styles they have come up with. I like their creativity. In a world of choreographed rump shaking and lip-syncing, Nickel Creek is a very welcomed break. I need to get to one of their shows and see who's going. I hope it is a lot of young people. This is one band where I would love to see some copy cat acts.

If you haven't been to their web site do it. Check out some of the links to Rolling Stone and sessions at AOL. Very good quality video performances on there.

*edit - wow did I mess up "psychedelic"

Their concerts draw a very diverse crowd. I made friends with the folks in line behind me waiting to get into the show (a couple old enough to be my grandparents), and then after the show at the bus I made friends with a group of kids my age. You see everyone from punks to cowboys and everyone in between in the audience. It's great. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
I've heard a bunch of their new songs at their concerts, and it's SOO good!! I'm excited for their next album!!! http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

my grandma was 40 when I was born... so I'd actually have to be less than a year old for that statement to be true, hehe ;) (and to be fair, I have a really young grandma 'cause she had my mom at a young age and my mom had me at an even younger age)

buuuuuuuuut I digress. Yay Nickel Creek. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
