I recorded this very simple version last night. It has some light mando, so I thought I'd share it here. Hope you like it. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Nice vocal, pretty tremolo, and a great tempo. I played along with it and we sounded great together. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

It would be nice to have this in the Cafe's MP3 page.

I just saw the Bill Moyer's video on Amazing Grace two days ago. I didn't know that John Newton, the author of the tune, was the captain of a slave ship before he was struck with the grace that is the topic of his song.

I like the song a lot too.

The site seems to not be very active lately, myself included. But the Mandolin Project site is a good place to post tunes you've recorded.

Mandolin Project (http://www.mandolinproject.150m.com/misc2006.html)

My instrumental version of Amazing Grace is on there. Listen to the whole thing though. It starts out simple and then gets a little bluesy.

Shane, your version sounds fine.

Could you tell us what mics you used, and your recording setup?

Thanks,
- John

Thanks for the kind words, guys.

John, the mic is a Behringer B-1 into an M-audio Firewire Solo interface. Guitar and vocal done together on the 1 mic, then mando added. Adobe Audition software. Just noise reduction, a little EQ and light reverb. Nuttin' fancy.

really sweet. a great spiritual, and one of this little jewish boy's favorite tunes- just beautiful in it's simplicity. your vocals and the sweet tremolo do it justice- really nice. thanks for sharing.

I thought I heard about every version there was but
at a BG festival in Newfoundland, Pa. earlier this year
I found I was wrong. A band from Oklahoma ( third generation I think ) did it and put tears in some of
the audiences eyes, mine included.
Looking forward to hearing yours if my dialup connection
can do it in the next couple hours.

One of the things to try if you ever want to lighten things up: the words to "Gilligan's Island" work perfectly to the tune of "Amazing Grace."

Not that I've ever annoyed people by doing that, or anything.

Great job Shane. I wish I could sing like that. Nothing better than BGG.

Nothing better than BGG.
Couldn't agree more, Doug. (Maybe a tie w/blues Gospel.)

Shane,
I just heard this again in my iTunes rotation and I just love it. What mando, strings, pick etc.were you using? Just beautiful, even the wife liked the mando in it and she hates mine. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif

Jason, thank you (and your wife) for the kind words. I appreciate it. It was a recording for a request on another forum for Amazing Grace recordings. Believe it or not, the only mando I had that was playable at the time of that recording was a beat up old Kentucky 250s that has a split top. It was my guinea pig mando to try to learn how to radius a fretboard. I got it radiused, and then split the top when I hammered a bit too hard on a new fret near the neck joint. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif I installed a deer antler nut and saddle, and I string it w/J74's. I can't remember if I put new strings on before recording that or not, but I probably did. Don't let that make you think that MAS has no real purpose or place in life though! A beat up $79 eBay Kentucky shouldn't be anyone's main mando.

I'm glad you liked it. I have a few other recordings on a Soundclick (http://www.soundclick.com/bands/pagemusic.cfm?bandID=640074) page. They're all guitar though - mostly country and country blues. I need to get some more mando added to some tunes. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Shane,
Killer! My all time favorite hymn. In fact, I do not add any new instruments to my stable unless I can learn Amazing Grace first ...so I really like the song http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

This was killer and very tasty mando stuff. I joined in also with you playing my tin whistle. It was fun. Keep up the good work.

Ditto, Fred. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif I am learning to play slide guitar in open tunings right now, and Amazing Grace was among the first tunes I picked out. A tune that you've known since childhood (or the womb, probably) makes a good learning tool.
