My father-in-law passed away about 2 months ago. My wife brought home a mandolin that was his. He purchased it new in 1993 and I'm curious about what it might have sold for in that year.

It's a signature series Bill Monroe model # 10/200

As I recall, they were about 4k back then.

i looked at a Bill Monroe model around this same time, the *sticker* price was $5500. hard to say what he would have paid - a picking buddy of mine has #18 i think, and he got it for around $4500.

there were 2 different versions of this model - one varnish (more common), one lacquer

Most dealers sold the Monroe lacquer for around $4000 and the varnish for around $5000.

List on the varnish model was 5500.00. They were good mandolins for the time. They go now for 10-12.5 K depending upon condition and urgency. There does seem to be a demand for them so they should be reasonably easy to move at the right price.
