I just got my new custom Weber Fern this past Saturday and am very pleased with it. I ordered it thru Dennis Vance with the Mandolin Store. Dennis is a great guy and a pleasure to do business with. I wanted a custom Fern with a one piece back, 8" radius fingerboard, 1 3/16" at the nut, and Dennis talked me into the cedar top which I am glad he did. I called and talked to Mary at Weber to ask them to open up the burst some to show more of the grain of the wood. They did a very good job I think. This instrument has a very pleasing darker sound with plenty of volume. I have some photos here: My Webpage (http://webpages.charter.net/nickystephens/06%20Weber%20Fern/)

Great looking mandolin Nickster, congratulations! How would you compare the cedar tone to other tone woods?

Very nice. I love the cedar top on my new Yellowstone; like you say a darker/smokier sound but still plenty of volume and a gutsy chop. I like the lighter touch on the burst.

The mandolin has an aged sound to it. It is very full with plenty of bass when you reach for it. I have played many mandolins with different tops over the years but this one is special. When I play it I just can't believe it is brand new. The volume allows you to just tap the strings gently and still be heard in a group setting. My wife even commented on how a more pleasing sound is coming from this instrument. I am very pleased with the Weber family on producing this fine mandolin with very little input from me.
