I am none too familiar with Gibson mandolins. Would this be an A40 or A50? Also all of the ones I have seen (in photos) from this era have been a sunburst. Does this finish look original?

Looks like an all original 1953 A40N which would be the natural finish and is correct for that year. Be nice to see the back but for sure it's the A40N not the A50 which usually is sunburst. The A40 is the sunburst model of the 40 series.

Picture not found [e***,dnf] anyhow 50 has bound back/fretboard, 40 is not,
and uses mahogany for back N sides, had a 40 for 10 + years, fine instrument ,
it has fond memorys of tunes learned on it.
