What is the best approach for getting good up the neck tone (assuming your mando has decent tone up the neck). Do you do any thing different with your right hand?

Nothing too special, but I do find that the sweet spot for picking the string shrinks a bit. On lower tones, I can get pretty close to the saddle and still sound good, but when it's fretted high, I have to stay closer to the sound hole.
