Hey Gang,
I haven't put this up at the Yahoo! site yet, as that will have to wait until I get home. But I spent another 'lost weekend' behind the microphone working on an oldey-but-goodie. I sent it off MikeB for approval, and he 'OK'd' it, so here goes. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

I like the genreal feel I put to it, but I can't say that it has any basis in tradition. I've always heard this song done with clawhammer and/or fiddle. I wonder if I'm not a traditionalist's nightmare with all the liberties I take on these tunes.

For example, with the verses in this particular order, I don't think this song is even about cornbread and beans anymore? http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

P.S. Special Thanks to Ken Sager for the Gibson Sam Bush strings. They sound great on this Weber!

Dear Gang,

When you hear this recording, you will see why I "OK'd" it. #(That's Benignus' little joke....) #I actually pretty much RAVED about it! http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Sounds great benignus. Nice fills and counter harmonies on the mando. Its got the three T's for sure; tone, taste and timing.

"Its got the three T's for sure ... "

Yeah, that fourth " T " is a tough one for me. It gets so bad some days, my band gets billed as " Slightly Out of Tune Rock-n-Roll ". LOL!

MikeB ... I work in the graphics industry, where nothing ships out without first getting an approval. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Thanks for the comments!

Standing Ovations!!!!!!!! Loud Cheers!!!!! Bravo Benig!!!

Absolutely Three T's. Very accomplished from the guitar, to the vocals and the smooth mando just flows like water. I would pay to come and listen. Heck I would pay to sing and play like that

Hey, Thanks everyone!

I asked Craig to take down my Landslide Mp3, and replace it with Skillet. To my thinking, two songs of mine up there at a time is plenty. Furthermore, I think I want to keep working on songs that are within the public domain*, especially when there is so much Old-Time material to work through.

*Of course, having just written that, I looked up the next song I want to record, and ... yep ... copyright 1963!?!

benignus, #here's the Tim O'Brien (http://www.timobrien.net/storedetail.cfm?rid=8) version i was telling you about. #it's from "songs from the mountain". #you definitely do it justice!

Benignus,

I've always been a big fan of Timmy O. - that said, I'd choose your take on that tune over his in a heartbeat! Don't look at it so much as taking liberties with tradition... think of it as a matter of interpretation. You've given the tune a bluesy, "Tom Waits" kinduva feel (I'm a big fan of him, too!), and I'm diggin' it to no end!

Well done, my friend... very well done!

...now, if I can only get that tune outta my head!...

" (I'm a big fan of him, too!) "

Oh Yeah! Tom Waits has been a HUGE influence on me over the years. I think I really learned how to 'tell a story' by listening to him. I realized that I could just be myself, and tell the story, and *that* alone could be entertaining.

IMHO ... most everything *else* about a song is just so much 'spit and polish', good for looking at your own reflection and nothing much else.

So ... Thanks a WHOLE bunch! That compliment means a lot to me.

Superb job Benig! Makes me want to jam again like we did a couple weeks ago. Although I doubt I could play mando as tastefully as you do on that recording. Nice work.

Benignus,
Once again, a great job! Sounds so smooth and unhurried...I feel so spaz every time I try to record. I like your version hands-down better than Tim O'Brien's...not often you can say that, eh? And that nice job you did on Sally Goodin (a song that I have NEVER liked) but I could listen to your version all day.
You play with a group, or all just solo? You got any CD's for sale?...I'd buy one!
Keep it up and keep 'em coming!

"You got any CD's for sale?...I'd buy one!"

LOL! Ya' know ... it was only *after* I had abandonded all commercial pusuits involving music, that I truly started to grow as a musician. So, I will likely never head back in that direction. My band is even hesitant to *book* gigs, as we would rather just play for free, on a whim, when and where we choose. We have never been turned away, but once we picked up our marbles and moved on to another - less intoxicated - audience. I don't think you can do that and still get paid.

So, in every sense of the word I am a 'free' musician, and much prefer it that way.

Thanks a heap for the compliment!

- Benig
