Butch Baldassari asked me to pass on this sad news. As some of you may recall, David and Butch recorded a CD recently and it's a real gem, gets played around our house alot these days. David and Butch shared an office at Blair School of Music.

From Butch:

David Schnaufer was The Genuine Article. Performer, teacher, historian. As close to living the Tradition as you could get. Rarely in one's life do you get to interact with someone with as much passion as David had for the Appalachian Dulcimer. Playing/performing, along with making as many folks aware of it as possible. His work is left unfinished, as is always the case in this type of situation. It's up to the rest of us to take his lead and move forward. God Speed, Butch Baldassari.

I met David at Winfield in 2001 and was able to talk with him about his work. What a nice guy and one heck of a musician. I am very sorry to hear of his passing. I hope that he and Butch had some other things recorded that can be released later. Ken Cartwright

Found this (http://www.velvetrope.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=830070&an=0&page=0). I only remembered David from his track on Radim Zenkl's "Strings and Wings" CD.

Sad to hear of Davids passing. Life is short. A cute story I heard, David was traveling and the weather was so bad from snow all motorists were stopping at motels for the night. David had been working on a particular tune so he practiced in the motel most of the night. When the weather was clear the next day, as everyone was checking out, someone said to him, "we hope you finally learned that dxxx song!"

Anyone know how old he was and the reason for his demise?

David and Butch were also on episode 377 of the Woodsongs show. You can download the video or mp3 and if you are an iTunes guy you can get the podcast. This show introduced me to these 2 guys and prompted me to buy their CD. Sad news indeed.

I'm saddened by yet another loss to our musical community. My thoughts and prayers are with David's family and friends, espescially Butch.

That Woodsongs episode prompted me to purhcase their wonderful CD. I commend it to you all.

David Schnaufer was the reason why I started back up with the Mountain Dulcimer. Appalachian Mandolin & Dulcimer is one fantastic recording

Sad news indeed http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif Once again the world is just a little bit more quiet.

This is truly sad news. I was rather ignorant of the mountain dulcimer (I think I equated it w/ the hammer dulcimer) before watching that great performance on Woodsong's. The cd w/ Butch B. is one of my favorites - I love the ethereal drone of the dulcimer combined w/ mando. What a great version of June Apple. Thanks David and Butch - let's hope they recorded some more stuff for release.

Sad news, David was a tremendous musician. I met David and jammed with him a few times many years ago when I was playing dulcimer festivals.

Saddened by David's passing. I've enjoyed listening to his music for years. He was at one time in my nephews band the Cactus Brothers. I'll let them know.

Sorry to hear about this sad news.

After hearing Butch and David on Woodsongs, I've been interested in learning to play the dulcimer and added one to my Christmas list this year. David made it sound like such a beautiful instrument.

I'll also have to buy some of his CD's along with the one he and Butch did together.

Read Butch's poignant recollections of David (link on Cafe HP). Touching.
