this is on the bay at the moment, I've never seen a headstock like that on a gibson, is it the real thing ?

Real but altered by an amateur with a bandsaw it appears. That finish is also redone.

Ouch! ...And, without knowing more or inspecting this thing, I'd be more likely to guess it as pre-1908. How was it dated to 1910?

It's too bad they couldn't have made the shape symetrical. I wonder what would be the best way to correct the head shape on this one? I would be tempted to make it a snakehead as it has had so much done to it already.

The inlay pattern matches one that I have a couple examples of around serial 52xx-55xx, probably ~1906

Take a look at the many, many photos in the eBay ad (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=170020161643). Someone apparently grafted a new piece of wood into the neck. Maybe the cut-down (and bound!) headstock is because there was some kind of damage.

Back wood looks very interesting, too.

Even if the mando is a mess, it still has the Handel tuners, and those go for quite a bit these days.

Take a look at track one of the Grisman/Rice "Tone Poems" booklet. Apart from the fretboard inlay (and the shape of the head) its almost identical - an A4.
