I'd love to get my hands on al old Gibson, or other quality h4 style. Got any idea where to find one?

Keep an eye on the classifieds section on the board here, plus Elderly Instruments, Gruhns, Mandolin Brothers, and Mandolin World Headquarters. They are all on the links page under dealers. I didn't see any when I checked just now, but they do show up from time to time.

You might look at Old Wave mandolins, Bill built me a terrific H2 copy. Would probably build an H4 copy.

He builds the best oval hole mandos I've played.

Lebeda makes an FM4 and FM5 which would correspond to H4 and H5. They have very nice sound and are reasonable in price. I am going with the A model as you can see. The link for Jeff Cowherd is http://www.mandolins.net/lebeda.htm . I was looking for H4s and H5s too and found them hard to find and when I did find them a bit pricey. I hope this helps.

Ditto on the Old Wave (http://jazzmando.com/bill_bussmann.shtml). Despite his reputation for the eccentric, Bill make a spectacular "traditional" style Dola!

I've played some really nice Capek mandolas, both A and F4 style oval hole, they're quite nice for the price. I believe Gallery of Strings has one in stock.

If you can go with a Gibson H-1 or H-2 instead of H-4, Charles Johnson has a few currently listed on his site. I have an H1 that I've been playing for 10 years, a great mandola.

Yea, after seeing the prices i'm definitely not against an H1 or H2. I figured the prices on old Gibsons would compare to the mandolins, but i guess the rarity drives the prices up.
Thanks for the tips, all
Len
Just curious, what have H4's sold for lately? Anyone know of a recent sale?
