This turned up in Port Townsend, Washington. Looks a bit Shutt-ish. Anyone recognize it?

More like Germanic than Shutt. #The profile is called wappenform (i.e., shield-shaped) and was pretty common, especially to guitars, late 19th to early 20th c.

No comment on the, er, aesthetics of this Almathea (stop me Victor....) Might these have been the progenitor of the various later two-point styles?

Turns out there's a name in it: "R.E. Byers, 1912"

I remember one of those was posted in another thread some time ago. Somebody called it "Batman Mandolin". http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

I think there's a few on the "mandolin oddities" thread

Yes, indeed, I posted this photo there. It was taken from a now-expired auction on Ebay Germany. I can't remember whether the Ebay instrument had a label, but I'm fairly certain both that one and the one in the original post are German.

Puhleeze. If I were selling it I would know better than to suggest that it might be a guitar, a lute, or a Gibson.

My eBay handle is the same as my Cafe handle, FWIW.

Well, it's almost certainly the same instrument pictured at the top of this thread. Note that in eight years no one has bothered to replace the E strings. I don't remember whether I found it on eBay or Craig's List originally. There are plenty of better-than-average photos in the ad, which should tell you everything you need to know. It has a heel crack and I'm amazed that it has collected 20 bids and is sitting at $202.50. It certainly isn't worth any more than that. Probably a wall hanger, except for someone with more dollars than sense.

It looks like it is no longer on eBay.

It looks like it is no longer on eBay.

I'd reported it for misuse of a trademark, and others may have too.

Relisted, minus the reference to Gibson:
