Hello,
Have any of you played a Rich Shulman instrument? He mostly makes mandolins and what makes his instruments unique is that the headstock, neck and sides are all made of one solid block of wood.

thanks

The reason I'm asking is because i was thinking of having him make me an octave mandoline.

Sounds familiar, I think a guy named Orville did that back around 1900 or so.

How did that idea pan out for Mr. Gibson? Seriously...I don't know much about it. Is anyone else making them like that nowadays? Why or why not?

I think it worked fine for Orville, it didn't work fine for the company that bears his name, it was an expensive way to build if the stories are correct. I don't know if anyone else is doing it this way now or not.
