A friend just asked me to learn Texas Gales so we could play it together. To my ear it sounds like the three sections were just pulled from other songs, the key changed and then strung together.

Anyone else notice this?

Texas Gales, also have heard it called Texas Gals. And they way I pick it is 3 parts:
1. All C chord, passing G
2. C, then Am, passing G
3. I, IV, V - very similar to Boston Boy

fun tune.

Red Haired Boy - Besides Little Beggerman, I've also heard it called The Old Soldier With The Wooden Leg in the Ottawa Valley. In Newfounland it goes by THe Old Ragadoo. I've also heard it called Gilderoy, which, I think is an anglicized version of the Irsh for Red Haired Boy.

There was an Old Soldier and he had a wooden leg
And he had no tobacco so tobacco he would beg.

I'm a Hearty Newfounlander Michael Chaser is my name.
I was born on Green Island I'm a fisherman by trade,
I was born on Green Island 'bout a quarter after two
with my hands in the pockets of me old ragadoo.

Boys of Blue Hill/Beaux of Oak Hill
Liberty/The Tipsy Parson/Liberty Two-Step
Colored Aristocracy/Southern Aristocracy (I think this is a "PC" re-naming, though)
Rickett's Hornpipe/Tanner's Hornpipe (as the Skillet Lickers called it)
College Hornpipe/Sailor's Hornpipe

And another genre: two tunes with the same name! There are two distinct fiddle tunes called "Rochester Schottische," one of which was written under that name by William Rulison of Rochester, the other http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif

How about a "nearly"?

Turkey In The Straw/Old Zip Coon

Zip Coon is basically Turkey except that it goes to Em in the A part; B part is the same.

New Five Cents/Robinson County
Barlow Knife/Cabin Creek

The 1st tune bugged me to death for years, as I heard it on the DIY network "Handmade Music" series; on one segment, Lynn Dudenbostel is explaining something about a nice old fern mandolin, and he picks it up and plays this tune. Catchy little thing. And I can't place it -- I've heard it, but can't remember the name or where it came from. Fast forward a few years to this year's fiddler's convention at Mt Airy, and I hear some old time fiddlers playing this tune... Great, I can finally put an end to my mental anguish. I wait for the tune tune end... 15 more times through... then finally, I get to ask what it was.. Robinson County! No, says another, we was playin' New Five Cents. It's the same thing, says another fiddler. Cool! But I didn't have a pencil with me, so all the way back to the camper I was muttering "Robinson County. New Five Cents. Robinson County. New Five Cents..." and by the time I got there, I didn't even have to write it down.

John Hartford called what I know as Texas Gales, Knocking at your door. The B part is a lot like the B part of Billy in the Lowground.

Cedartop,

Yea, and the A part of Texas Gales reminds me of Over the Waterfall though it is different. Kind of like Over the Waterfall played inside out. ;-)

Oops! I kept thinking something was wrong with that, but couldn't put my finger on it. I just turned 40 today. I guess I'm getting early-onset Alzheimer's! http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Too Young to Marry = Sweet Sixteen and other titles that I can't think of right now.

Brad Leftwich says Old Bunch of Keys is the tune they took to Nashville and called Katy Hill and butchered. or something along those lines.

Seneca Squaredance = Georgia Boys = Waiting for the Federals.

President Garfield's Hornpipe = just plain tough! (that's my title for it...)

edit: woa... just looked on Fiddler's Companion under "Too Young To Marry" and it's also (or at least related to):

"Buffalo Nickel," “Cat Ate the Handsaw,” "Chinky Pin," “Crooked Stovepipe,” "Darling Child," "Fourth of July," “Grey-Eyed Cat,” "Hair in the Butter," "I'm My Momma's Darling (Child)," “Lead Out,” “Liesel,” “Love Somebody,” "Midnight Serenade," "My Love Is/She's But a Lassie Yet,” “Old Mose,” “Raymondville," "Richmond Blues," “Soapsuds Over the Fence,” "Sweet Sixteen," "Ten Nights in a Bar Room," "Yellow Eyed Cat."

Since we are doing titles that had to be PC'ed over the years, this one really did. Disclaimer: I'm not making this up, or endorsing it, just reporting it. There is a very old, traditional fiddle tune called:

"Who is That N----r Going Around With Your Wife"

On Rayna Gellert's CD, she calls it:

"Who is That Rabbi Going Around With the Preacher's Wife"

The Buckhannon Brothers perform it as:

"Who is That Neutron Going Around With Your Proton"

An Acre of Clams/Rosin the Beau
Katy Hill/Jenny Lynn as per Mr. Monroe.
Hell Among the Yearlings/Lantern in a Ditch
Sally Anne/Big Tater in Sandyland/Sail Away Ladies(Danny'O)
Seneca Square Dance/ Waitng for the Federals

Who Gonna Talk to Dina is the A part is Waiting for the Federals and B part's much like Black Mtn. Rag.

i play Lost Indian and Cherokee Shuffle different, but only in the B part.

Take an A or B part of a tune, play it with the A or B part of another tune. Come up with a name, and viola, another fiddle tune!

I was surprised not to see "Donnybrook Fair"/"Joy Of My Life" listed... also known as "Bane Of My Existence" by a fiddle player I used to be in a band with. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
