Amplifying the sound

My dad plays mandolin in a church group, but he is usually drowned out by the electric piano and violin. He plays an acoustic mandolin into a microphone. Do you have any ideas for helping him produce a louder sound? If he turns the volume up there is usually too much feedback.

Rather than add a pick up, it may be a simpler fix to buy his own directional instrument microphone that would resist feedback and be tailored to his requirements.
