I have the opportunity to purchase a 1923 Gibson A2-Z Mandolin. It is in very good condition, with all original parts. I have tried to find some for sale to get an idea what they are selling for but I can't find any. Does anybody know what it may be worth?

They go for about $3800. They are the best older Gibson A models you can get. I'd prefer that one over an A4. I think Mando Bros has one for sale. I haven't looked in a long time.

I agree on both counts.
They are the best, no idea why.
And, expensive.

Thanks for the speedy replies. If the deal goes through, I'll report back with pictures.

Gryphon Stringed Instruments in Palo Alto, CA has a 1924 A2Z (sort of, see their description for details) listed in their inventory (http://gryphonstrings.com/instpix/20993/20993.html) at $3250.

Hello,

I have seen two of these lately advertised at $5,500 (1924) and $5,895 (1923). Is this the going rate for the A2Z these days?

Thank you,

Jason

It all depends on the condition. Most of the real nice ones I've seen are in the $4500 and up catagory.

Yeah, but you posted a response 7 years later than the question. When did you say the fish was caught?

Gail -- Thanks for your reply.
Mick -- Now you've spoiled the surprise! You weren't supposed to see this!!
Tom -- I am aware of the age of this thread. That is why I ask for the "going rate" "these days".

Pre-crash, these were being offered for $6500-7000. Advertised prices less now. Great mandolins, in general, but hard to separate the mystique of a relatively rare model from reality in posts made on this forum. Make sure you can play before you buy. That being said, I love mine.
