I guess the scroll work isn't going to the best on low priced mandolins but can't they do better than this? (as seen on Ebay)

My soft spot for legos seems to be the sole of my foot, as I step on them in the dark. Ouch. I would play a lego themed e-mando in a heartbeat. If I had to keep it accoustic I would have to go with lincoln logs.

Here's one from a builder in Florida. He says that he does not care to ever make another mandolin. He says that he's made about 20 so far. It looks like he used the fingerboard and pickguard from the Taiwan Ebayer.

Threads like this make me unseasy, especially as I'm working on building my own mandolin with a non-trad body shape. Even if some of these instruments are ugly, some poor guy put a whole mountain of work into them and then has to see his work torn apart on the internet because he tried to do something different. Just seems a little mean spirited, IMO.

Another example from Taiwan. It has been suggested that these are probably not made by any one luthier. They seem to do a better job at inlay (if not a little over the top) but don't quite get the symmetry right. The scroll has to be the toughest area to get "right".

Jun-28-2006, 8:09am
I don't think this is mean spirited. It's simply a group of people that have a high regard for the scroll. You're free to dispute anyone's charge of a scroll being ugly without fear of ridicule. The defense that somebody put their sweat into an item so therefore it shouldn't be viewed as ugly holds little merit. Somebody built all of those $4.99 mandolins on eBay but I'm surely not going to defend them as good instruments or even nice looking instruments because somebody worked to put them together. With that said there is a thread elsewhere regarding the Gibson Lump Scroll and nobody feels compelled to defend that (to honest, there is no defense). See this as it is as a light hearted sharing of ideas.

This thread could be considered free market research for luthiers and mando manufacturing companies. #Here is the highest desnity of mano afficionandos giving honest feedback on the shape of a mandolin design element. #I wouldn't flame anyone who felt the design was their cup of tea. #Different strokes. #None of the posts so far have impuned the person making the mando, rather the design elements. #I think the Sullivan is pretty cool and non-trad, myself. #Finally, those less expensive mandos where the scroll isn't even carved were more likely made by machine than man... note the lack of scroll peak.

Look at the threads on the Eastman headstock logo. #People get very tied to the shape of their instruments and to what is/isn't on the headstock. #There are plenty of people who wrote that they would only consider the Eastman with a different headstock logo. #Look at the long thread on David Grisman's electrical tape on his headstock...

I hope Markishandsome builds the mando that looks how Markishandsome wants and doesn't need the Cafe' to validate the design. #I've yet to see a builder post one and get ripped up... #Perhaps the original scroll was an anonymous target... #Look at the support given to the hobbyists building IV kit mandos!

To continue, the famous Regal Reverse Scroll (from a picture on frets.com (http://www.frets.com)). To my thinking this one is backwards, you may feel differently. Note that the top binding just stops on both sides of the body.

[QUOTE]The defense that somebody put their sweat into an item so therefore it shouldn't be viewed as ugly holds little merit.[\QUOTE]

I'm not saying they shouldn't be viewed as ugly, but it's just plain impolite to say so in a public space. If you had me over for a fancy dinner party that you worked real hard to put together and I shouted out "these potatoes taste like moth balls!", you'd be hurt and probably offended.

Mass produced mandos are one thing, but when something is obviously hand-made by an individual like the first few on this thread, I feel like there's a line that gets crossed. If you don't like it, you don't have to buy it, but if you don't have anything nice to say...

I'm not trying to lecture anyone or tell them what to say, I'm just explaining why sometimes threads like this make me a little uncomfortable. Maybe I'm just too sensitive. Probably has something to do with being so doggone handsome http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

Why of course it is.

Look, keep in mind that real people build those mass produced mandolins. People that own factories pay designers, the machines are run by people that take pride in their work, and real peopel market them. In other words there are real people sweating those things out too and I don't minimize their efforts.

You have to click on this message thread to read it. If it offends someone they can choose not to read it. I personally am offended by most of the newspaper editorials I read. In order to avoid being offended I stopped reading them.

With that said this salad I'm eating tastes like mothballs. Maybe worse.

As starter of this thread (and a Libra) I did examine my intent when I read markishandsome's concerns. I tried to formulate a response/defense and couldn't quite come up with one. I like the responses from DiegoMoon & JEStanek. They said what I believe. I also really like some of the examples others are posting. I have only carved one scroll so far,I now have a first hand impression of how hard it is to do. I believe most posters here are doing it in the spirit of fun. That's my only intent.
