Is it just me? I really want to know the price point on that 1921 F4. I know the days of $10,000.00 F4's are rapidly approaching (or here). I also know I could never make a serious inquiry. I'm just too curious and would just love to know. . . .

Is it on ebay? I remember only back in 2000 that F4's went for $1000 to $2000. Back when a Loar was only $60,0000 or so. So actually the F4 is gaining quicker now than a Loar.

I’d like to know how much that one’s going for also. #My husband and I had a nice 1914 F4 that we sold just a couple years ago for $3500. #It would go for almost twice that in today’s market.

There are allot of F4s being made these days but most are F4, F5 hybrids and I’ve only seen a couple that are intended to be reproductions of the old Gibson F4s. #I’m getting ready to put the neck on the one pictured here. #I’ve tried to reproduce the look and sound of a good old F4, including Virzi. #Time will tell but it seems to me that building an accurate F4 is just as difficult (maybe more) and time consuming than building a nice F5. #I’m not trying to market anything rather just pointing out that the prices still seem reasonable to me on the old one’s compared to having a vintage reproduction made. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/coffee.gif

I like the sound and feel of my Hamlett #11 better than any vintage F4 I have played.

Let's not forget that the instrument is a Loar period instrument with a Cremona brown finish...one of maybe 200 made in the period experimenting with the color for the F-5's. I believe one went for $15K last year. I don't think you can compare them with a teens F-4. BTW, has anyone tried to find it in the Archives? I can't seem to locate it.
I agree with Gail on building a reproduction F-4, or for that matter any reproduction mandolin...they are much more work than a builder's stock F-5 type instrument. Nice work Gail!

So what is the asking price for this one? What is the big secret?

I think that that last on on eBay that went for $15.5 was a fluke. I spoke to the under-bidder and he said he actually went overboard in the heat of the auction. Frankly I wasn;t even certain that that Loar era one was a Cremona finish anyway. The photos looked just like my 1924 which was more reddish.

Hmm, do I have a bug? I just typed the serial number into the search box. You can also make a link like so

http://www.mandolinarchive.com/gibson/serial/76547

etc.. enter whichever serial at the end

Can't say without a S/N. Tuners and bridge look right. At $1K starting bid, worth a shot.

When you click the images it goes to the same instrument on a completed auction.. suspicious
