Macro-lens, my foot - that thing is a microscope!
Wow!

Cool pics. Did you use a tripod for those shots? I just purchased a Fujifilm Finepix F470 something or other. It has some kind of funky super close macro lens too. I need to try it out on something. Lp

Yeah -- I think I saw DNA in that fifth pic.

Yes, wood has DNA. All living things have DNA.

Viruses (Virii) have a different kind of DNA (RNA) and are therefore not really "alive"... Everything else has DNA: bacteria, fungi, plants, animals, etc...

grandmainger--I hate to even go here, but as a plant biochemist I have to disagree with your statement that wood has DNA. It HAD DNA....

The area of a tree inside of the cambium layer in a tree is xylem, or wood. Xylem tissue is initially alive, but looses it's cellular contents and becomes a hollow tube to become a functioning water conducting tube. There may be a little DNA around, but not much-probably only in specialized cells. It would be too energetically expensive to maintain that much DNA in a tissue that is mainly for structural support/water conductivity...

wow, I'm a geek http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

You're right dang, of course. There will be traces because it's probably to expensive to remove completely.

And while we're geeking, jestanek pointed out to me quite rightly that "Viruses may have single stranded DNA or double stranded DNA or RNA. They come in all flavors. They can be deadly, a nuisance, or helpful for genetic engineering experiments."

I never thought we'd go that deep, but this is a thread about looking really close at small details! http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif

I guess we have specialists in everything!

Wait, wait... I used recently issued filtering software to analyze the image and found that, yes, some DNA is perceivable...

Phish, is the macro an accessory, or are you simply utilizing the telephoto capability of the camera?
