I just wanted to send a huge thank you over to Mike & David for putting on an outstanding show last night in Las Cruces, New Mexico. I believe they are heading off to Austin. You Austinites will not be disappointed.

A couple more thank you's. Steve Smith made it all happen. Thank you for doing the leg work and organizing a wonderful evening. We all had a great time. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

...and one more big thank you to Bill Bussman for sharing with us his creation of the Swiss Cheese Mandolin. You were right!!! It truly has "munster" tone. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Jamie,

I actually thought about taking my camera with me but I decided against it in the end.

It's just my personal feeling that a flash going off in the middle of the show is too distracting and disrespectful to both the performers as well as the audience.

I was telling my wife on the way to the show about the Cheese-o-lin and she gave me that look like she thought I was pulling her leg.

You should have seen her face when they brought it!!! # http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif # She'll never doubt me again!!!

I got to see the boys the night before in Taos - incredible stuff. Not too many people playing this style of mandolin. This is what I want to play! Thanks David and Mike.

Kieth,
I totally agree with you about no flashes during a performance. I was imagining something back stage. I'm mortified by flash photography during concerts, weddings, baptisms, you name it....

At least you have hand with the bride believing you. Next time she raises an eyebrow at your description of a crazy mandolin just say, "Honey, I have two words for you. Bill Bussman!" I hope Mike and David make it to the North East (specifically Philly area). I love Stomp and am envyous of the show reports here!

Did Steve Smith play along with David and Mike on any of the tunes?

Jamie,

Yeah it was Bill Bussmans' "hand" to be exact http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

They also put on a great show at the New Barn Dance Hall in Ramah, NM. It's "a hundred miles from nowhere, out on the desert sand," but we managed to get 100 people there. It was mostly people who had never heard this kind of music before, and their mouths were literally hanging open in amazement. Wild cheering at the end of songs. It was really neat.

There's some photos of their Gils in the "Post a Picture" section.

One more thing I wanted to share...

I have to say that Mr. Comptons' Gil F4 has to be the most beautiful mandolin that I have ever seen and the sweetest sounding mandolin that I have ever heard.

Keep in mind that this is based on how my ear's and eye's picked up the whole F4 Gilchrist experience. #It was truly amazing and I walked away in complete awe.

I've mentioned this story before, but when I saw David and Mike play in St. Louis, Mr. Gilchrist was there and when he came up to play with them and looked around for a mandolin to play, his eyes LIT UP when Mike presented him with that F4. So, it must be a favorite of his too.
