I had some distinguished visitors at my house last weekend. Left to right: my Model 5 99452, David Long's Model 5, a 2003 in the 500's, Mike Compton's Model 4, I forgot to look at the label, and Mike Compton's Model 5, a 2002 in the 500's. What fun!

There were a few other mando things to sample, black face Kimble A, Red Diamond oval A, Bussmann Old Wave mandola, and the Old Wave octave got lots of playing time. A couple Gils sprinkled in as well.

That red f4 of Mike's is a beauty.

Man those guys are hard workin' travelin' man'alin players. Look on a rock in New Mexico and there they are!
BTW nice mesa view Don! Mike needs to put his hat on, those headburns hurt!

What happened to Long's Gil?

Yeah, where's "The" cap?

May-17-2006, 12:18pm
I like David's Farmer's tan. #What a nice collection of mandolins on your sofa!

I may have to bash up my headstock scroll. #The only ones I've seen broken like that are David's Gil, Big Mon's Loar, and Thile's Dude. #I could look famous!
edit: Rhonda Vincent's Mando from the cover of her new CD is also wounded.

Now there's ca couch I wouldn't mind sittin on for a while! I just love that F4

That view from the mesa has a shiny rock in there http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Reminds me of a lot of pictures I'm in (as a friend says,"do not stare directly at the forehead").

David said it was an end pin accident that broke the scroll. The "The" cap is in Mike's hands. It was a little overcast that day but still enough sun to burn at 7200 feet elevation in the high desert of New Mexico. The action on their mandos had been sinking for a week, but they played a brilliant show at the New Barn Dance Hall in Ramah, NM to about 100 people. Fodor's has listed Ramah as one of the top 10 destination spots in the US. We're all trying to figure out why and hopin' y'all won't come visit. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif

Will I see any of those mandolins tonight in Las Cruces? http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

The next 7 hours will be the longest 7 hours of my life. I can't wait to see this show tonight.

Thank you Don for sharing the pics!!!!

Hey Don, Nice pics! I had 'em over at my place too. Very nice guys and, of course, world class musicians. I asked Mike if I could check out his mandolin, he says "you're going to defile it aint ya?" I says "I sure would like to". Well, he let me and I did.
Those mandolins are fantastic, they take a bit of effort but when you lean into them there is no end to what they'll give. Big time dynamic range with a very rich resonant mid-range. I've not played any other mandolins like them.

Them boys are a national treasure and I told 'em so right to their dang faces! Not only are they housebroke, but they obviously have good taste in manalins:

May-19-2006, 1:24pm
That's the "action photo" I was hoping for! Thanks Bill. Funny!
