Hey Gang,

I would love to be able to carry my hard-cased mandolin on my bike -- anyone got a solution for backpack-type straps for a hard case, like you see on better gigbags?

Thanks

that would be great, specially for a tkl or something shaped-like.

There are a few of these on the market. Here's one (http://www.finecases.com/browse/bobelock/bobelock-1521.html). I saw a different type in the Mandolin Bros. catalog that actually attaches to a case that doesn't have the d-rings. I can't recall the brand on that one.

Try the Backaxe:

old style A cases [maybe even the golden-gate reproduction] fit inside
a daypack drybag I got from REI, I think Seattle Sports made them for them.
Dry in wet weather is good.

Try the Backaxe
That was the one Mandolin Bros. had in their catalog.

The BackAxe is a pain in the BackSide to get setup, at first. Get through this pain and you'll be all set. I carry my mando and larger OM on my motorcycle at speeds I won't post here http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif and they stay nice & snug. Have yet to have a problem.

I love the Backaxe for my mando, I use it on my scoot and it makes walking around airports a breeze.

Bobelock makes backpack straps that are nicely padded. Work on many hard cases if the D rings are there.

Thanks -- that Backaxe looks very promising! If I can find an easier way to carry my mando for $50 it will save me hundreds from buying an addtional instrument to leave at work!

Rob- I know you're asking about hardshell cases... but I have to put in a word for the Alpine Boulder gig bag (available at Elderly and Giannaviolins and other places)... it has thick padding, is made with backpack material so is good in anything except seriously drenching rain, and has a very nice configuration of straps, loops, pockets and handles, including padded backpack straps. Usually available for just over $30. NFI, just a happy customer.

Here's my latest case cover. Single strap that goes across my chest (neck/shoulder) and if tight enough doesn't move when bicycling.

It's padded and seems to be waterproof.

$20 at the local sporting goods store.

Love to all,
KS

Thanks for the recommendations. I ordered a BackAxe yesterday. I'll have it later this week; I'll let you all know how it works.

they should make a boulder alpine thats a little bigger so you can put your shaed tkl inside it, like a case cover, but cheaper.
