yesterday, at flowerpot's mandogathering, i noticed that the peghead on my '13 gibson A was much larger that a couple of later (1918, 20's) gibsons. it seems that there's about 1/2" more space between the nut and the tuners on the older one. anybody know why they changed, and exactly when?

They made them smaller in preparation for Calton cases, which they knew would break headstocks http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

i got my 20's Ajr back from the shop today, and measured the pegheads of it and my '13 A. the '13 measures 6 11/16" from the nut to the tip (!), while the 20's is 6 1/4". a difference of 7/16". all of the difference is between the nut and first row of tuners.

for the multitudes waiting breathlessly wanting to know.....

The peghead was redesigned as a result of a lawsuit brought against Gibson by a large, powerful Japanese
manufacturer which had been recently acquired by a group of renegade Samurai (Ronin). Years later, Gibson
(Norlin) returned the favor.
