That video has floated around the Cafe for awhile. #I recorded it back in September when I was gearing up to compete in the Indiana St. Mandolin Contest (didn't place, but did do 4th in banjo--don't you worry, I've been practicing my a@@ off--at least on banjo--recently so I hope to see that situation rectified). #I find that recording and watching myself (like staring in the mirror while I play) helps a lot in understanding hand position. #I posted that video to the Cafe back then and it popped up again when I was selling my Kimble F5. #Thought of it again after having an email conversation with Butch Baldassari which turned toward Tanyards. That's what lead to me putting it on youtube.com

I also have another one up. #Do a search for Looks Like Trouble and you'll find a cut from my DVD with Gordon Bonham. #I hope to get some other real blues cuts from that album up there. #

I may also try getting some of my other video stuff (Monroe, Fleck, Osborne Bros, stuff like that) up there too.

Thanks for noticing the video. #I love Compton/Monroe so I feel it's a pretty big accomplishment to now be able to play some of it.

Forgot to add. As far as comparing mine to Compton--my version pretty much comes from Mike. It's based off his recording of it on Grounded Centered Focused with Butch Robins as well as the "Compton Instructional DVD" that Mike Stangland put together several years ago from Mike's workshops at a Kaufman Kamp that's been floating around awhile. One of the big signs that is based off off Mike's version is the G chorded suspended type patterns that are used where you would play the C/B notes on the A string. Instead he fills it up by playing over the held down G note on the D string, creating that suspended chord thing that you hear in Ebeneezer Scrooge or Old Dangerfield.

Yea, but unfortunately they weren't Pointers (they were Big Smiths--which I hate cause the damn things fall apart too quickly. Pointers are built like tanks). It's amazing how much better my playing is wearing pointers http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
