I might be throwing myself open to some serious ridicule... ...but I'm a huge Zebra fan!!! Randy Jackson is one of the most underrated musicians in the rock world. (John, I'll get off my soap box now)

I would like to learn ¿Who's behind the door? on the mandolin. Has anyone made an attempt? I know how to play it on the guitar, but when I try to transpose it over to mando, it lacks.... ...how would you call it?http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif ....gravitas???

Much oblidged http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mandosmiley.gif

I've never tried, but what a great album that was! I didn't think anybody remembered it but me. I know what cassette is going to keep me company on the ride to the office this morning.

Hey Eugene,

I've got "The very best of Zebra Black & White" on at this very moment.

If you want to hear some awesome stuff, pick up Zebra IV.

Since we're into true Confession here ...

Yes, I saw Zebra in concert way back when I had long hair. I think I still have my ticket stub!

Though never a fan of heavy metal I had to check out what you guys are gushing about. For those with high speed connections and similar curiosity you can view a lenghthy preview of a DVD that's coming out soon. . . The preview is enough for me, thanks . . .I'll stick to Hendrix when I really want to rock out. Nice GIBSON guitar though . . .

Please David ... Zerba isn't even close to being the most "incriminating" concert I've seen.

Pat Benatar
Def Leopard
Van Halen (Yeah ... I saw 'em with Dave)
Sammy Hagar (pre-Halen)
Can't even tell you how many times I've seen Rush!

There's a "hair shot" of me somewhere on that Pic-of-Yourself thread. I posted it there once, but I sure ain't gonna dig it up again!

In the Rock world my #1 favorite band.

Moving Pictures/ Exit Stage Left is by far my favorite Rush tour ever!!!!

I just learned Freewill on the mandolin, and I am wrestling with "Spirit of the Radio". The guitar wasn't even a challenge

Rush was absolutely my biggest influence as a young guitarist. I only wish they (as an act) were more spontaneous. Their insistance on plerforming every song as close to the record as possible ultimately 'lost' me as a fan ...

... and set me off looking for a more organic, malable, improvisational style of music to play. Guess where I ended up? http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

None of that change in style means I'm immune from enjoying an embarrasing concert or two. After all, I did go see The Buck and Lorretta Show!

" I just learned Freewill ... "

That song is *all about* Geddy's bass line behind the guitar solo! I think that is also the highest note he sings in the whole catalog (with the possible exception of Hemispheres).

WOW!!!!!!!!! I love talking Rush!!!!

You're dead on about "Freewill" and Geddy's bass line. However I think Caress of Steel has some of Geddy's highest vocals. Have you heard "No one at the bridge" and "I think I'm going bald"?

(What is it with these references to the folically challenged) http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif

'No One at the Bridge' was the first guitar solo I ever learned!

That solo coulda/shoulda been played by Steve Hackett of Genesis.

Re: vocals? (as far as i recall, at least)

NOatB = High E
Freewill = High F#

A friend once 'roadied' a show, and on the ride down in the van he proved his claim of being able to conduct a conversation using *only* quotations of Ruch lyrics! So funny ... and he pulled it off with only a few 'stretches'.

That band sure has some dedicated fans!

Michael,

It takes a lot to stop me dead in my tracks... ...and well you Sir impressed the living day lights out of me this afternoon. WOW!!!!!

As for your dedicated fans comment....

In 1976 Rush released 2112 and their follow up, "All the worlds a stage". I was 7 years old and well going on 30 + years later.... ...They are still on heavy rotation in my life.

When I switched over to the mandolin, I also started playing lot's of Rush tunes on the mando. I truly believe that this has helped me with working through the scales.

This has been a fun 'blast-from'the-past' for me this afternoon.

I wish we were sitting in your backyard, sipping a cold beverage, picking out Rush tunes in the desert. Ive seen the pictures ... I've seen that view. That would make for one Good Friday!

Alas ... I gotta dig into this pile of paper. Cheers!

Michael,

Invitation is open!!!!!

Hey while we are on the subject of Rush, I brought my bowlback with my up to Ruidoso, NM for a nice quiet weekend.

I spent most of Saturday morning trying to transpose Broone's Bane from Guitar to Mandolin. The guitar was a walk in the park; learning it on Mandolin is like climbing Everest. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mandosmiley.gif

Given the facade I maintain on this forum, I'd better not go into a list of incriminating concerts I've seen...or post pictures of myself in my days of long hair and electric guitar wankery.

I don't have Zebra IV, but I do have 3.V, No Tellin' Lies, and, of course, the self-titled debut. I suppose on your endorsement, I'll need to look into IV.

P.S. Also Black & White the very best of Zebra has some material that never made it to any CD before. ....oh yeah and those songs are also just as awesome.

....a ringing endorsement yes indeed http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mandosmiley.gif
