I need to learn how to play "southbound Pachyderm" sp? by primus on my mando to prove to my friend who is a primus nut that a mando is more versital than just old time and bluegrass musical instrument.

Pink floyd would work also, anyone have any suggestions on good floyd songs to work on with my Mandolin.

Im new to the Mandolin (7 months) but I get along pretty good.

are there any places I can find notation or tab for these songs?

Thanks.

It's unlikely you will find mandolin tab/notation for any Primus song, just not much call for it. Your best bet is to search the guitar tab sites and translate those tabs to mandolin.

You have a slightly better chance with mandoloin tab for Pink Floyd, but I'm unaware of any. Pigs on the Wing would probably be pretty straightforward on the mandolin.

Moosie,
So the work of John Paul Jones and Jimmie Page on some Led Zeppelin recordings, and David Grisman on some Grateful Dead recordings doesn't count? What about Peter Buck of REM?

If you want to debunk the idea that the mandolin is only a BG-Trad instrument, look into the work of Jamie Masefield with the Jazz Mandolin Project, Don Stiernberg, Paul Glasse, and many other Jazz players.

Go to
the MandoZine search page (http://www.mandozine.com/music/tabledit_search.php) and the Café's rock tab page (http://www.mandolincafe.com/cgi-bin/tab/searchdb.cgi?searchterm=rrck).

I've always wanted to hear someone tackle "Wish You Were Here" on the mando.

Not the response he was looking for, I'm sure, but I've no doubt you gave that a great deal of thought.

Not as rude as you might think; it's an in joke with fans of Primus. #In fact, early Primus paraphernalia included a sticker that said exactly that: "Primus Sucks!"

Thanks for the ideas guys, I didnt really exspect to find any mando tab for primus. But I think I could transpose the guitar notation.

I think There are several floyd songs that would work well with the mandolin. Primus is just so different than most music that I thought that would really be cool to incorporate the mandolin.

I've always thought that "Us & Them" would work for mandolin.

Doesn't Primus play the incidental music for South Park? Lots of mando in that.

If you want to impress your buddy, learn instead "Jerry Was a Racecar Driver" on the mandolin. Even played much higher, he'd recognize the riff immediately. And if you have a F style, the punch you could add would make it even more memorable. Or ... you could just find a rare mandobass and stretch out your fingers abit.

Very true, in fact their website is primussucks.com

As for the mando content, Ben Winship plays a Primus song on Mando

A while back when i first started learning I figured out Pork Chop's Little Ditty from the Pork Soda album. It is an easy short instrumental with Les Claypool playing solo mandolin.
