I gave this to Dad about 15 years ago. He's getting a bit sentimental lately, so it has come home to me.

Non F style (it's a A style!)

Non Gibson (it's a Fletcher Brock)

....heck, it's even a oval-hole!

I'd arm wrestle you for that Kimble Jim. That thing is beautiful! One of these days I'd like to get my hands on one.

Hey f-d,

You're taking the thread down! #Those mandos don't really belong with the Dean, Kimble, etc.

Okay, here's one of my all time favorites, it's a Coleson. It probably should be in the "oddities" thread...

Here is my Hondo HMAN-30 with "Honest Abe" for scale. I have the D'Adderio FT-74s on it so my colleagues don't have to hear too much string noise.

There may be a few more, but finally a thread where I can contribute - ha.

This is my "Montana" flattop. Cigar for scale, Gibson Monel won't-rust-in-the-salty-air strings. Not sure if you can make it out, but thats a solid four-piece top and you don't see that very often (especially on non-Gibson, non-"f" mandolins.

I will just link to the Post a Picture of Your Bowlback (http://www.mandolincafe.net/cgi-bin/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=15;t=14185) thread.

All right, here's my entry: 1931 octave mandola by A. Puccinelli, Chicago.

First mandolin I built. Definitely not an F style and not really an A style either.

Here is "the Dromedary", the wicked little Ibanez 514 that got me started:

Simlar to "The Dromedary"...Antoria ca. 1973...I think this is (was?) also an Ibanez brand.

http://www.pbase.com/joe_tn/image/53683865.jpghttp://www.pbase.com/joe_tn/image/53683866.jpg

May even have some wood in it, but I can't be sure http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

P.S. --- I think it does have wood! see http://www.elderly.com/vintage/items/90U-4459.htm Similar Ibanez at Elderly Instruments. I've been looking for info on this mandolin, and this is the first I've found.

I've been lurking for a while, but this thread is too tempting...

Here's a pic of my first mandolin, a Stradolin w/ cursive screened logo at top and a few cracks around the fake f-holes. Bought it from a flea market in California about 15 years ago for 30 dollars. I didn't know any better at the time, but it sounded great.

Once I got into mandolins, I decided I had to have a whiteface A-3. Not sure why, but I was obsessed. Finally bought a clean one a few years back (for nearly 50x what the Stradolin cost) and--wouldn't you know it?--the darn Stradolin sounds and plays way better. It's not just a dud A-3 either, some of these old Strads sound really good!

Would love to post a pic of my Breedlove Quartz OF, but can't seem to get the pic file small enough for it to allow me.

So, you will just have to imagine the Satin Sunburst finish on an A-Style with F holes and beautiful sound...

PS. If anyone can help with shinking the size to below 153600 bytes that would be a plus (I can get to 260000). Until then you will just have to take my word on just how beautiful it is.

MLT, check out Grandmainger's tutorial on how to resize pics for the Cafe- LINK (http://www.grandmainger.com/picpost/)

While I'm here... Fliss, I'm really diggin' that flattop. I love that simple yet very clean look. Bill Davis has done a great job of capturing that with his flattop as well.

Here it is! #Ta Da! #My Breedlove Quartz OF. #I searched for the right one for some time at several music stores and on-line ads. #But this one found me.

Thanks Hydrilla for pointing me to the tutorial.

In honor of my new mandolin (a humble but nice little Washburn oval-hole which I have been playing constantly), my young son made me a mandolin pin out of clay (with matching guitar, for scale). #Note the white binding and f-holes ---and it's fretless(!)

and Tasmanian myrtle on the back. No truss, he uses a graphite reinforcement of some sort. Wooden tuner buttons add a nice touch. 12" radious fretboard. I'm making offerings to the Int'l DHL gods.
