A guitar student brought in her father's mandolin the other evening, an A50 that looked like it might have had a couple of hours playing time in its life, with the rest being spent in its hardshell case. She plans to learn to play a few tunes on it, but was also interested in dating it. It had a serial number stamped in ink that began with the letter Y, followed by a four digit number, then a gap followed by two more numbers. I have read about their numbering system at the time in reference to guitar serial numbers, and was wondering if it was similar for mandolins. Any input would be appreciated.

Those are a bit weird but I believe the Letter indicates a year, the 4 digits a batch or factory order number and the dash xx is the individual instrument of the batch.

According to Gibson's web site, it is a 1953. Their numbers are confusing but a FON of 1953 sounds reasonable for an A50.
