You could ask Ben Wilcox (BRW Instruments) to build you one that was less fancy than his standard F, and you'd be very pleased with the result. His standard F is about $3500 currently, and is a bargain at that price. Ask him to price you one without a bound back and fingerboard.
I'm not sure you can get a Collings MF for $3k, but if you can that would also be a good choice.

You could look for a clean used yellowstone. Really a terrific mandolin. There is a nice one in the classified for under $3000.00. And it has tonebars to boot! With all the extra features it's a great deal. IMHO. Nick

imapickn,
Would that F5G be at Elderly? I wonder if they would take my Yellowstone in on trade?

You might want to check out some of the builders from Eastern Europe. August Waters, a frequent poster here, is a dealer for some of those guys. Check out www.galleryofstrings.com. I think you could find yourself a very good instrument in that price point.

I'll trade you your Yellowstone for an old Stella bowlback. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Thanks, Steve, for mentioning me -- Both Capek and Janish have F5's under $3k. They're doing great work.

Skip Kelly builds really nice stuff. Josh Pinkham plays one of his F-5's. I had the chance to check it out. Killer!!

" Rose " mandolin for quite a bit under $3 grand , but right up there with many of the good builders , also good enough for the player of the group " Nothing Fancy "
"Don's F5's are powerful, muscular, ballsy, and very well made"
Uh...........That's certainly an anatomically correct kind of description..........Steven Stone, you taking notes?.........I'm sure our female members will find that...uh......interesting.

Take a look at a Stiver.Flawless craftsmanship and LOUD!!!
They are generally brighter tonally than others.Lou is a great guy to work with also.Elderly is the distributor for new ones, you can find them used occasionally for around $3000.

Get a Stiver, you can't go wrong. Even Niles said that he really liked every Stiver that he has ever played. I feel that the new ones are an exceptional value.

My Ratliff F was considerably less than 3 grand and worth every penny plus....Audey makes a fine mando. My 2cents...

Call Glen Cecil at 304-344-1967 in Charleston, W. Va.
He builds a great mandolin for around $2200. Hard to beat for the price and sound.

After looking at many many many (did I say many)different instruments, I chose a Ratliff f....As a matter of fact, mine will be here tomorrow. For the money and quality....I dont think you can beat Audey Ratliff.
Uh Kieth......Might wanna consider rewording that description to. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif

Geez, Dale, I better stop writing these x-rated tonal descriptions. It's a good thing I didn't post about that sexy little blonde Collings A we talked about last week. I coulda been arrested!
