Old Mandolin

Hello:I just returned from a string fling in El Centro California held this weekend, Friday and Saturday, I entered the flat pick guitar competition and other pickers contest. The other pickers consisted of banjo, autoharp, zither and the Mandolin. I seen this crazy looking F5 style mandolin that this guy was playing said it was made in the thirties, it was passed down to him. He called it a steward or studabaker or something like that,, what was so unusual was the scroll was backwards, said to myself how in the heck does someone make something that crazy looking as that thing,, the peg head looked like some was drunk when cutting it out. would like to know more about the instrument if anyone has info on it.. By the way the sounds were superb, sounded great,,, Dennis In Arizona

I almost (but not quite) hate to admit it, but that's exactly how I feel whenever I see a standard F. I'm certain a lot of people must have thought that very thing upon first encountering Orville's bizarre sense of aesthetic ca. 1900.
