I was listening for subtle differences first time around, like differences in durations and clever note shuffling. There were none. No trick questions here. Armed with that knowledge, second time around, 30/30. Does that count? http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

Grove, I think I had the same deal. Was looking for subtle changes, then caught on.

26 of 30. That was fun. I guess that means I can easily tell when I botch a tune! http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

I wonder if they will get a statistical cross section of people that way, because musicians are obviously attracted more easily to their site. And I wonder what data they have to connect the results with - apart from gender, nationality and distance from London ??

25/30... dissapointing, but my wife was playing piano in the background!!!!

Maybe it's just me, but I thought that most of the "wrong" notes were real clinkers, which sounded out of place... I think it would have been harder had they replaced the notes with another "pretty" note more often.

I was looking for subtle differences in the beginning and after the first 8 or 10 I think I got the hang of it. I guess I should have read all the posts first. I scored 25 out of 30 but my cat was distracting me by walking in front of the screen. I made him take the test and he scored 28 out of 30.

30/30 the second time. I realized that I was listening for subtle differences the first time and second-guessed myself a lot.

I wonder: Is it better to not hear the differences, or to hear differences that aren't really there?http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif

There was a test included with a survey from the site (if you respond by email) and I got 30 right again. I'm pretty sure I would have gotten 30 the first time if my wife hadn't popped in and asked me a question. As Flowerpot said above, on the ones that were different, they were glaring, IMO.
Groveland, I hear you. Good question, but if I had to choose, I'd rather be able to hear differences. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif

Upon retaking I scored 30/30 (also not trying to program at the same time like at work earlier). I took the e-mail they sent along to my family. Hopefully they will participate as well. Interestingly, my wife who can't sing on pitch at all scored a 26/30 (like me) her first time.

25 of 30 first pass.

kvk
Mar-02-2006, 12:25pm
24 out of 30.

There were a bunch of them that were obviously different because a note was out of the scale.

There were some I voted as different even though they sounded very similiar as I though notes might be in a slightly different order but worked just as well harmonically. Ya know how in a fiddle tune, you can switch a couple notes around and hardly even hear the difference. That was the thing that was hard, remember whether the pitch went down up down in the middle or maybe up down up.

Second time 29 out of 30. Stopped looking for note shuffle and just concentrated on whether the notes sounded like the same tune.

24/30. it was probably the note order 'gotcha'. i was less confident of identifying that error than 'out of scale' notes.

I think the two I got wrong were probably calling two different when they were in fact the same. Imagining subtle differences when there were none. All the ones I picked as different were obviously so....notes out of key.

26 out of 30 with no excuses http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

It was easy to pick out the ones that had "wrong notes". I'm thinking the ones that I missed had different notes but were still diatonic?

I wrote and asked which ones I missed but they said they couldn't provide that info since so many people were taking the test (over 11000 so far)

26/30 Would be interesting to see which ones i marked wrong, mostly to see if they were more subtley different than the vast majority or if I was imaging differences that weren't there due to marking almost none of them as the same.

While the study is interesting to me, I was so bored about a quarter of the way through the test I had to really force myself to get all the way through :>

22/30. I kept getting distracted by a shiny thing or something--a bunch of times I realized at the beginning of the second one of a pair that I hadn't actually listened to the first one.

27/30, is this a music test or an attention span test?

I think it's got to be about half and half. Even if it's easy for you to spot the differences between the two, if you've half-forgotten the first one by the time the time the second one plays, you're pretty much done for there.

And attention span has never been one of my strong points.

But then again, I took it a second time when I was feeling a bit more focused and only got 24/30, only marginally better than the first time.

Ha! The attention-span question is a good one... On a few examples, I found myself thinking about other things (like what I really SHOULD be doing while at work right now) instead of listening carefully. At least, that's my excuse: 26 outta 30.

PaulD
Mar-07-2006, 4:05pm
27... trying to bash through it over lunch at work, but I think the ones I missed were places where I thought I heard a subtle difference (extra note in a measure and such). I probably would have still missed them if I'd been taking my time in the quiet of a library. If I had stuck with the notes that were glaringly different I probably would have been fine. Interesting little test... thanks for sharing!

is this a music test or an attention span test?

Same thing.

I teach Ear Training classes to Conservatory students. The attention span is the greatest limiting factor when it comes to listening aptitude.
