I've been waiting a lifetime for this instrument, and it's better than I'd hoped for. Red spruce top, one-piece back, radiused fingerboard, and some of the craziest cool wood I've seen in awhile. And it sounds just like the sound I wanted which is deep, resonant and responsive.

I should also mention it has a James tailpiece.

Absolutely beautiful. And I bet it sounds good. I've played one Kimble, an A4 that Compton/Long were taking around and it was amazing. Enjoy, enjoy.

Lust, greed, avarice, envy, [runs away screeming].

Oh yeah, great mandola Scott, few are more deserving! What you do here qualifies you for sainthood, but a new mandola is much more practical.

Peace, Mooh.

Nice looking instrument and I really like the headstock.

I know you were chomping at the bit to see this mandola eventually make it to your hands. Looks great. Congrats!

By the way, Will recently completed his 100th instrument. I thinks about time to have a Kimble-fest. Maybe plan something for this coming IBMA.

Lovely! So simple!

I'm intrigued by the material on the front, where the neck joins the body, and the binding reaches the 15th fret. Is that curly maple? It looks great.

You know Scott, I think you need to start sensoring some of these photos here. My heart can hardly take it when I see pictures like that. This is what usually happens, my heart drops, I close my eyes, I start playing "air mandolin"(I usually get weird looks from people who are around me), I then open a new webpage and go check out my bank account, I then realize I can't afford it(which is the way it always ends). But I think I'll be ok for now.

Anyways, that is a stunning looking mandola. That is exactly the way I want my next mandolin/mandola or whatever to look when I get a new one. I love the simple appointments, so sleek looking. You are going to have to record something and post some mp3s for all to hear.

Wow Scott that has officially brought me out of lurk mode!

Beautiful.

I got to play a Kimble Mandola at IBMA WOB two years and it was incredible. That one was more orange in color and had an oval.

Will seemed to indicate at that time that he preffered to make Mandolas with Oval hole, I'm interested in how the F hole version sounds versus an oval. How would you describe it in comparison to one of his oval holes.

He sure can build 'em!

Love the inlay. It has a great Kokopelli feel to it.

I think that's the A-3 peghead inlay. Most appropriate for a natural top A model.

SCOTT - That's a fine lookin' dola!!! Looks ALOT like Will K's #100...an A-model but with oval soundhole. I'm taking it to the studio tomorrow to record a duet with John Mock on my KIMBLE Mandola...trying to finish that O'Carolan cd before you do!!! Butch Baldassari

I recall eavesdropping on Will exploring one of his own earlier Mandolas. As I entered the room he was playing one of the Bach Cello Preludes, pulling out some of the most beautiful tones out of wood I'd heard in that register, and it dawned on my just how well he understands the craft. (Then you take a look at his finish, design, and detail and you REALLY get it.)

Nice Ax Scott... Lovely.

It's very much akin to Compton talking about how good a musician Steve Gilchrist is and how this naturally finds its way into his building. These are guys who are building instruments with a musician's ear and sensibility. It's one of the reasons Wheel came out of the gate so strong early on. Will's a helluva musician.

Will has a beautiful two point mandola in the same blonde and tortoise binging that he had on display at the Marilynn Mair concert with the Dayton Mandolin Orchestra on Feb. 11. He also had his #100 with him. I got to play and fondle both. Outstanding work and a great guy to talk with and he really can tear up those Bach suites.

See Dave's dizzying fingers in action (http://DaytonMandolin.net/CAS/Photography/Rex/369.jpg)! (Man, I wish I could play like that...)

Aren't you also the recent recipient of a Kimble mandola or mandocello? #Didn't you take delivery of one in Indy last December when Mike and David L. were in the area? #

Good memory you've got, Jim! Yep, I grabbed Kimble mandocello #1 (http://DaytonMandolin.net/Conductor/Kimble/Kimble.html) and have been enjoying every minute with it (especially now that I've finally paid Will en toto! I can play it now with a clear conscience.) http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif

I also played that 'dola that Dave's playing in the photo, as well as a couple of other Kimbles and a smattering of Lebedas that Jeff Cowherd (http://www.mandolins.net/) had on hand at the DMO Concert Artist Series program on Feb 11th. (And if it weren't for previous financial obligations to Will for the MC, and of course The Wrath of Wife, I'd have probably walked home with a couple more prime specimens.) http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Dang!

I couldn't make the DMO event on the 11th, family type obligations... but that 'cello is really cool. I've been meaning to make it over there for a DMO event for a while I live in Columbus but I haven't made it over yet.

Anyway good choice on the Cello Allen, I'm sure it sounds amazing.

C'mon over on Saturday, March 11, 7:30 PM at Sears Hall, Jesse Phillips Humanities Center, University of Dayton, for our Second-Annual March MARCH MADNESS and Other Musical Novelties program! Put it on your calendar now to avoid conflicts. #http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

I'll have additional info posted at the DMO site soon (as well as posted info here on MandoCafe, CoMando, and other usual haunts). If you'd like to jump on our email list to get advance postings, sign up here (http://DaytonMandolin.net/Contact.html) -- it's free! #http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif #Also check out our Calendar of Upcoming Events (http://DaytonMandolin.net/Schedule.html) page for more info.

We're also hoping to make it over to Columbus sometime reasonably soon. The ground swell of folks wanting us to hit the road is highly encouraging! Just a matter of working out some logistics and calendar availabilities...

As for the Kimble mandocello, I'll be playing that in a Concerto by Giuseppe Zaneboni (w/DMO backup) for our Spring Show, June 4. I'm really looking forward to that! #http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mandosmiley.gif

Will was here at my store when Compton & Long did a mandolin workshop (http://www.franksviolins.com/comptonlong2005.asp) and concert on December 11, 2005 and he brought a number of his wonderful creations with him. Mike and David both played Will's instruments (as well as their usual mandos) at the concert and they sounded fantastic. I can hear Will's level of commitment in all of his instruments and their sound and workmanship speak for themselves. Thanks for making another mandolin player smile from ear to ear!
