Kimble Mandola

I've been waiting a lifetime for this instrument, and it's better than I'd hoped for. Red spruce top, one-piece back, radiused fingerboard, and some of the craziest cool wood I've seen in awhile. And it sounds just like the sound I wanted which is deep, resonant and responsive.

I'm intrigued by the material on the front, where the neck joins the body, and the binding reaches the 15th fret. Is that curly maple? It looks great.

You know Scott, I think you need to start sensoring some of these photos here. My heart can hardly take it when I see pictures like that. This is what usually happens, my heart drops, I close my eyes, I start playing "air mandolin"(I usually get weird looks from people who are around me), I then open a new webpage and go check out my bank account, I then realize I can't afford it(which is the way it always ends). But I think I'll be ok for now.

Anyways, that is a stunning looking mandola. That is exactly the way I want my next mandolin/mandola or whatever to look when I get a new one. I love the simple appointments, so sleek looking. You are going to have to record something and post some mp3s for all to hear.

I got to play a Kimble Mandola at IBMA WOB two years and it was incredible. That one was more orange in color and had an oval.

Will seemed to indicate at that time that he preffered to make Mandolas with Oval hole, I'm interested in how the F hole version sounds versus an oval. How would you describe it in comparison to one of his oval holes.

He sure can build 'em!

I recall eavesdropping on Will exploring one of his own earlier Mandolas. As I entered the room he was playing one of the Bach Cello Preludes, pulling out some of the most beautiful tones out of wood I'd heard in that register, and it dawned on my just how well he understands the craft. (Then you take a look at his finish, design, and detail and you REALLY get it.)

It's very much akin to Compton talking about how good a musician Steve Gilchrist is and how this naturally finds its way into his building. These are guys who are building instruments with a musician's ear and sensibility. It's one of the reasons Wheel came out of the gate so strong early on. Will's a helluva musician.

He also had his #100 with him. I got to play and fondle both. Outstanding work and a great guy to talk with and he really can tear up those Bach suites.

Will was here at my store when Compton & Long did a mandolin workshop (http://www.franksviolins.com/comptonlong2005.asp) and concert on December 11, 2005 and he brought a number of his wonderful creations with him. Mike and David both played Will's instruments (as well as their usual mandos) at the concert and they sounded fantastic. I can hear Will's level of commitment in all of his instruments and their sound and workmanship speak for themselves. Thanks for making another mandolin player smile from ear to ear!
